  1. those numbers are ridiculous lol did any of his linemates get drafted?

  2. snowhiteside

Serious question: Does Lemieux take the mantle of “the great one” if he never stepped away from the game (which I wanna say was due to cancer, could be wrong)? I never had the chance to watch Lemieux in his prime, just a couple season when he was at the tail end of his career. Aside from statistics and highlights, I really have no clue how good this guy was. So I’m curious what everyone thinks!

Good thing hockey is still played the same way as in the 80’s and the level of competition hasn’t changed so that this can be a valid comparison

  4. Disastrous-Group4521

It’s not even Lindros level who had 149 points in 57 games.

  5. Hack874

Idk what more absurd, this or Gretzky scoring 517 points in one season in Atom

  6. Brodieboyy

Never forget ray ferraro had a 108 goals and 192 points in his last whl season, ray fucking ferraro lol

  7. Starvinhkd

Mario had an average of 1.883 ppg average. Gretzky had 1.921 so I’m thinking he would of been close but not quite. Would have been great to watch in my early teens though.

  8. zelepukinralley

Wow, Mario was seriously on a different Laval than everyone else

  9. Bumbahkah

Also, the goalies were trash compared to today

  10. VinegarPie

Ah, my favorite team. The ‘L’ tetris blocks.

  11. Taste_Diligent

I’m sure Gretzky outscored Bedard as a junior and he turned pro at 17

  12. The_Giver_Thegoo

How dare you say the Cooper XL7 wasn’t fancy!

  13. smilecrocodile1

Now compare the goalie equipment from them and now. Goes both ways.

  14. 99titan

Only thing missing from that ensemble are some Cooperalls.

  15. Graemelee

What are they, the Laval Tetrimino?

  16. gnarly-autist

Someone’s clearly affraid. Just like if Mike Bossy didn’t retire early to his bad back he would have easily surpassed Gretzky.

  17. Groundzero2121

Lemieux took off 3.5 years. Returned as a 35 year old mid season and finished with like 35 goals and 40 assists in 40ish games in 2001! Dude was a phenom

  18. JJCJR1128

Not to mention, Lafontaine, Bossy, Lafleur, Dionne.. still impressive.. wonder who wins the lottery

  19. LordFartWolf

    Different era though

    Nice helmet

  20. Totknax

While chain-smoking Salem Menthols the entire time too.

  21. Personmcpersonface93

Don’t get me wrong, I love Lemieux, I even had a poster of him in my bedroom growing up, but the game has evolved so much in almost 40 years that it’s hard to compare, in way more ways than just equipment.

  22. Tinypeepeecommy

Yeah Mario was different man. People don’t realize, he’s easily the only person who could have come close to most of Wayne’s records if it wasn’t for the cancer and the injury issues. With all that he’s still easily top 3/ top 5 all time. (Edit: a word)

  23. Dank_Cthulhu

I’ve always thought that if Super Mario hadn’t had the injuries that he did that caused him to miss so much time he would have had a chance at some of Gretzky’s records.

  24. franksobotka89

Gretzky is the greatest stats-wise, but Lemieux really is the most talented player of all-time.

  25. PsychoWarper

While players are generally better today especially Goalies I still believe in terms of pure talent Mario Lemieux is the most talented player in NHL history, McDavid is absolutely up there but man Lemieux’s skill in combination with his size is just ridiculous.

Theres a reason even after all the injuries, cancer, taking 3+ years off and being in his mid 30s Lemieux could still score 76 points in 43 games in 2001 during what many call the dead puck era and when Goalies where much better in comparison to the 80s. He was 30th in total points in a season he played just slightly over half the games, the next person to appear in the top 100 scorers that season with less then 60 games played was Al MacInnis at 86th with 54 points in 59 games.

The dude would be dominant in any era tbh.

I loved Mario and Wayne, but I don’t seriously worry about stats from before, let’s say 1995 or so, or maybe even as late as 2005. What happened? Professionalism.

Look at Garrett, ya, we love him, dude was eating hot dogs on the bench haha.

Now, basically, every kid in semipro has been drilled beyond anything even Mario went through in junior. The world changed, the average player in the NHL today, transported back in time would be putting up incredible numbers. Nobody is surprised when a 4th liner puts a laser beam of a wrister into the top corner when the goalie has hugged the post. All that separates the shots of 4th liners and 1st liners now is the speed and accuracy of the shot, but the ability to make that shot is in every single player on the NHL ice surface now. We also see way better awareness, and fewer dumb plays, Steve’s Dangits would be a weekly 2 hour special on CBC Sunday Sports if he was doing it in 1991.
