  1. I wish the Pens would hire Hextall back, just so they could fire him again. I honestly belive he has some CTE issues messing with his judgement. Both PHI and PIT would be better off if he did nothing as GM.

  2. The Bottom 6 and bad goaltending at times hurt them

    The core was great

I'm not sure how you fix this yes 20 Million in Cap space is something

But im not sure how you fix this and ask the core to carry you what 1-2 year's

    This is very tricky

  3. So they would have made the playoffs and get swept by Boston. They’re getting a good pick at #14 (could be 4th). Actually a win

  4. Bringing in Hextall as GM was a mistake. To be honest, I didn't think so at the time, because he drafts pretty well (about half the Flyers' roster are his picks), and manages the cap decently. That said, the Pens needed a GM to freshen-up the roster … and maybe get rid of Sullivan. Some of the players he let go or traded had me baffled, but I wondered how much of what he did was influenced by Burke. I mean, if Hextall was the sole problem here, Burke would still have a job.

There may not be any big name UFAs this summer, but with the right additions, the Pens can easily get back into the playoff race just by upgrading their 3rd & 4th lines.

  5. Jarry biggest reason Penguins missed playoffs along with not winning anything. I think he is gone not sure about De Smith but they didn't have enough in Net. Jeff Carter I think is still top faceoff guy but gotta have him on a line with guys who can play. Crosby along with Malkin well past their primes with LEtang playing after STrokes. Trading Marino was perhaps an issue I don't really know. Petry I was glad was finally able to get liberated from Montreal though bit long in tooth by then. HExtall got a rough deal for Flyers and here. Though some of those trades did not seem to help team. Maybe if they got Chychrun or Bjugstad instead of getting older and slower? Losing Evan Rodriquez along with Kapanen for nothing didn't help their roster either ;).

  6. Given that Minnesota isn't starting Fleury in the Playoffs, Pens should try to get him back in net as a starting goaltender for one last chance at the Cup and have the main core group retire together. Would be a Pens fan dream. 🙂

  7. Ugh Heckstall doomed this team and sent them into an early rebuild. The top 6 is still elite. It’s the rest of the team where the problems lie.

  8. The issue right now is

    It’s just the core.

    Inconsistent Goaltending
    Bad special Teams
    Poor Bottom 6
    Very little leadership

A lot needs to go right to ride this ship

  9. I think the lost against Montreal in the playin round should have been a wake-up call that change were needed, but nothing impactful was really done sine then.

  10. They won’t make it again next year. Other times on the rise. Pens had their glory. No room in the playoffs for the Pens for the next few years.

  11. Look at Kapanen's career. He has never really proved much consistently. Getting the cap space was about the only good move Hextall made…

  12. I dont expect Malkin and Crosby to go out in a whimper… Next season, while older, they may play better hockey.

  13. Pittsburgh is the most interesting decision point. Ducks and Red Wings were so good for a number of years and then just became awful. Can the Pens avoid the fall without being stuck mid tier?

  14. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁no playoffs i love it.

  15. A few major problems with this team. Pens are soft. Jarry, Letang and Malkin got run over a few times over the season. No player stepped up to defend them. Malkin or Crosby fighting is bad for the Pens.

Defense is a mess. I was worried about it last year after seeing the number of saves Jarry, Desmith and Domingue were having to put up. Then they traded Marino and Matheson. Marino and Matheson for Petry and Smith (who didn't play) is not trading up. Dumoulin in particular isn't playing as well as he should be. I expect new management to try and trade him before the draft.

The bottom six contributed little to scoring. It was sad to see Rodrigues go for nothing to Colorado for only 2mill. Heinen, Carter, McGinn and Blueger had bad/unlucky years. Granlund was having a poor season before the deadline and contributed nothing to the Pens.

The team is old and the trades form last summer only made them older. Almost all the skaters on the roster are 30+. They traded and lost a few 27-29 year olds last year and gained one AHL player.

The Toronto core is around half the cap. Pens core of Crosby, Malkin and Letang is about 20 million. Pens are overpaying for Zucker, Rust, Granlund and Rakell. I like Rakell, Zucker and Rust, but 5-5.5million for 20-30 goals is a joke. Malkin is on 6.1mill and was the second leading scorer.

Hextall had to go. He made some very bad trades but, honestly, some of the more egregious trades came from Jim Rutherford's era. Trading the 2015 1st round draft pick for Perron. Islanders got Matthew Barzal with that pick. Picking up Ryan Reeves for the 31st pick (Klim Kostin) then trading Reeves, Filip Gustavsson, Ian Cole and another first round pick (K'Andre Miller) for Brassard. (No complaints about the Kessel trade for Kapanen and 2016 1st (Sam Steel))

Drafting has been a problem too. They've had 3 first round picks in 10 years – Kapanen (who was picked before Pastrnak), Poulin (who has 3 games last season) and Pickering last year. Only 6 of their current roster were drafted – Malkin, Crosby, Letang, Rust, Jarry and Guentzel. Their playoff run success has meant late draft picks but also they've traded away decent prospects and missed out on some good players.

Obviously, at 14th in this draft, the Pens will manage to luck their way to a top 5 draft pick. But I'm not sure that the Pens are good enough to compete again next year. They have several bad contracts. Jarry might leave. The team is unbalanced – older and slower than most teams. Is it time to retool or rebuild?

  16. Just a couple notes:

    – The Pens lost in 6 games to the Red Wings in the SCF in 2008
    – The 2010 series loss to Montreal was Fleury crapping the bed
    – The 2011 7 game series loss to Tampa was when both Malkin and Crosby were injured so the fact they pushed it to 7 games alone was impressive
    – 2012 against PHI there wasn't any defense played by either team that series lol
    – 2013 always stung because Vokoun played lights out but the offense fizzled away in the ECF vs the Bruins

  17. We sat back and watched Hextall make one horrific move after another.

  18. Man.. I don't know how I'd fix it. I definitely don't envy whoever the new GM will be. I'm pretty confident that some smart decisions will put them back into the playoffs.

  19. The head says you have to rebuild now, but you know that with Crosby, Malkin and Letang still there, they have to keep trying until the players age out

  20. if i was the gm bring back zucker if he signs less than 3.5 aav and achibald and pehling pitt just has to rework the bottom 6 and get rid of carter

  21. Buy out petry and granlund, move carter back to la for a 7th, retain whatever needed. Give Jarry a prove it contract, go after blackwood in fa leave DeSmith in WB, call up smith hope 2-3 (nylander, poulin, puutsinen) younger prospects are ready, resign zucker and then you gotta find a rhd that can play top 4 mins.
    Jake-sid-rakell
    Zuker-geno-nylander
    DOC-Poheling-rust
    Puutsinen-X-poulin
    Petterson-Letang
    Smith-x
    Poh-rutta
    Jarry
    Blackwood

  22. Zucker is the only UFA this team should resign. If they don't not a big deal but he fits this group. We need a new goalie the Jarry project hasn't worked and we've been trying for too long. The problem is the current contracts on the roster not named Sid, Geno, Tanger or Jake are pretty brutal cap hits that kinda haunt us till they're expired

  23. Absolutely bonkers how Hextall managed to dig the Pens into a deeper hole in such short time.
I just can’t wrap my head around why they brought him in. He had done nothing of note that helped the Flyers leading up to his firing. What made him appealing??? Sincerely??
It’s odd. I was alive when the Pens were out of the playoffs before, but I hadn’t latched on to hockey until years later. They’ve made the playoffs for half of my lifetime, and it’s ridiculous that a good season for quite a few Pens ended just because they decided to bring a Flyer to Southwestern PA.

  24. An intoxicated chimpanzee could have guided this team to the playoffs. Couldn’t be happier hextall is gone
