Leafs in 5, or Leafs fail in 7. We all know it.

How physical are you expecting the game to be on a scale of 1-10?

I posted in the daily discussion, but wanted to share a systematic breakdown of line up differences between this year and last year. It’s striking to see how much the Leafs changed with moves/health. Apologies for any errors in the Lightning lineup.

    **Toronto**

    **Forwards**
*In*: Bunting, O’Reilly, Accari, Lafferty, Jarnkrok, Zach Aston-Reese
*Out*: Mikheyev, Kase, Engvall, Clifford, Blackwell, Simmonds
*Verdict*: Massive upgrades throughout. Of those who left, only Mikheyev would be guaranteed a spot this year, and he awful during the playoffs.

    **Defense**
    *In*: McCabe, Holl, Schenn
    *Out*: Muzzin, Liljegren, Lyubushkin
*Verdict*: Closer than the forward group. Muzzin was just coming back from injury for the playoffs last year, and did well, but wasn’t quite his formal self. Schenn feels like an upgrade over Lyubushkin, at least with regards to our team needs.

    **Goaltending**
    *In*: Samsonov, Woll
    *Out*: Campbell, Kallgren

Verdict: Massive upgrade again. Campbell was statistically a terrible starter last year. If he were still here he might be the 5th best goalie in the organization. Kallgren is now our 4th goalie, instead of our second.

    **Tampa Bay**

    **Forwards**
    *In*: Michael Eyssimont
    *Out*: Ondrej Palat
*Verdict*: Not many changes, but that’s a downgrade. Palat was a beast for Tampa last season, especially during the playoffs, where he was nearly a PPG player (though this season he’s fallen with the Devils). Michael Eyssimont has 2 points in 15 games with the Lightning (and 22 PIM). He’ll likely be replaced by Tanner Jeannot when he’s available.

    **Defense**
    *In*: Perbix, Raddysh, Cole
    *Out*: McDonagh, Foote, Rutta
*Verdict*: Again this seems like a downgrade because of the AHL callups here, but maybe not a huge one. Perbix is a recent call up who was playing in the NCHC/AHL last season, though seems to be stepping up decently with 15 minutes per game. Darren Raddysh is another AHL call up this season, playing 16 minutes per game in 17 games – seems like a stay at home defenseman. Cole is vet who seems to be doing well, playing 19 minutes a game.

Of those who left McDonagh and Foote and playing good minutes on Nashville, while Rutta is doing the same as a largely neutral play on Pittsburgh.

    **Goaltending**

Vasilevskiy is still there. If he’s injured then Brain Elliott takes the crease, and he hasn’t been very good.

    **Other Stuff**

Oh god the officiating. Tampa led the league in PIM drawn this year with 754. The Leafs only drew 570, good for 21st. Both were roughly equal in % PIM (as is true throughout the league because of game management). The main thing to prepare for is that the refs will be way more involved than they usually are, and special teams having a larger impact than normal.

I’ve never analyzed the data, but I get the sense that special teams is a different beast in the playoffs, since teams can spend the time to really scout each other.

**My Guess** Last season was evenly matched, and the Leafs easily could have won in 6. This season, our forward core and goaltending are massively improved. My mind says Leafs in 5, my heart says leafs in 6 because of officiating. Leafs in 5 final answer.

Me: I’m not going to get too anxious this year. I’ve learned my lesson.

Also me: Works until 6 am, sleeps for 2 hours, wakes up and is unable to sleep for the rest of the day because too pumped.

I still haven’t learned my lesson.

  26. rudown2brown

Bold prediction: a blue and white team will win this series.

  27. MetalPunk125

What I’m looking for in this series:

    1. Stars all come to play and take control of the series at even strength and on the PP.

    2. Sammy to draw as close to even with Vasi.

    3. Keep it disciplined and tight defensively. No gimmes to the other team. Make them work for every goal.

    4. A little bit of luck with injuries. No major injuries to star players. We’ve been bitten hard by this in the past (Muzzin in CLB, JT in Habs, even Austin couldn’t shoot against the Habs).

If we do all that we should win this series.

  28. senile-animal

I’m readyyyy already! Let’s go buds! I’ve got the day off work, 12 beers and a bowl of soup. LETS HAVE SOME SMILE
