We need to remember that refs are human, and make mistakes, although the league has fail-safes in place that usually get the call right.
I personally like when the refs let the players govern themselves to a certain point.

Of all the major sports, NHL refs are by far the best and most consistently fair.
They make mistakes of course, but I really think they’re pretty fair overall.
Maybe they let a little more of the general roughing stuff go in the playoffs but not much.

No beef here either. I can live with an occasional mistake. As a fan of another sport which stops the game every few minutes to review a call or non-call, I’ll take the action of hockey every time.
I love a game that keeps moving and is over in 2 1/2 hours. So much better than the 4 hour marathons.

So far I have no complaints with the way the games are called. I like the fact they are letting them play

I was laughing at the Florida fans last night after Gudas essentially jumped Marchand repeatedly away from the puck, as they proclaimed “Refa are swallowing their whistles. Sweet!” and then proceeded to cry about no calls when Barkov tripped over his own foot. Typical hypocrisy.
I honestly don’t care if they want to call it tight, or let them play and only call the no doubters.
As long as it’s call that way for both sides, which has largely been the case so far.
Scissors4215
Happens every year. Not that they are blind but they call it looser every year once playoffs start
Bos4271
Honestly the issue is the inconsistency. They don’t call any penalties until they do and then it’s called bs because the same thing happened multiple times without being called…

Man all this ref whining really ruins the experience. They have to make split second calls while fat lardasses sitting at home with one hand on a plate of nachos and the other hand on a beer get to criticize it with 17 different angles in slown motion 4k resolution.
Like yeah there are some bad calls, missed calls, and obvious make-up calls, but theyre doing their best. And unless you want each game to take 6 hours because they review every single thing for 5 minutes then just chill and enjoy the game.

Referees were shit in the regular season too

I’m glad they let them play. The 3 game suspension is a joke and makes the league look like one.

If it’s not a penalty in May and June, shouldn’t be calling it in October to April.

This is hockey. Let them play. Fans and players are going soft

I think the biggest frustration is when it’s so blatant that an ESPN commentator can call it out. When THOSE calls aren’t being made, I’d say that’s an issue. Otherwise, let ‘em play as long as it isn’t intent to injure type of stuff.

Give them some credit: they’ve been consistently shit all season.

Lol they’re trash during the season too. It’s been like this for years. Stop acting surprised

There’s 2 different rule books… one for the regular season and one for playoffs…. problem is the playoff one is rewritten every night and no one has any clue how the game will be called.🤷♂️
brechbillc1
Nah this is inaccurate.
What they actually do is swallow their whistles all game, letting both teams get away with murder. Then they will call a penalty on something so minor and ticky tacky with 3 minutes left to go in the game, preferably for the team that was favored in the series or the big market team, and then that team will proceed to win the game off of a power play goal.
Bonus if it’s done in a game 7.

This is refs every year. They always make calls or no calls for nothing. They always do not watch plays clearly every games. In any sport refs always do that. When they watch stuff from the penalty box they have to think ether if that’s a penalty or a goal. It’s always up to the refs .
This is my thought but the refs needs to double check on stuff before they call on something because something might not be right. Because a player might have not done it or the stick was on the ice the whole time. But the refs might miss call stuff a lot or might not see something correct all the time.
This is all my opinion
free_mustacherides
I just hate the mentality that a playoff penalty needs to be bigger than a regular season penalty. If it’s a trip, call it.

This is exactly what others call « championship experience » or being « tough to play against. » The teams that make deep runs every year will interfere and hold everyone away from the play, and the refs only call something if the person with the puck or about to receive the puck hit the ice. Tampa understands this. The Isles understand this. Teams like Edmonton, Toronto, and Florida (at least last year’s juggernaut version) have no inkling of it.
Norby710
Nhl refs are game managers. There is no set rule book they are calling from unless you do something over the top. Up 3-0 on power plays? Good luck out there, the other team can essentially murder you.
