Seems to me that if Matt Dumba *really* wants to stay with the Wild, Guerin loves him as much as he says, and if Guerin plans on moving Merrill and Goligoski anyway, I’d think their combined $3.2mil in cap space would help sign a hometown deal for Dumba to keep the top 4 intact for a couple more years.
Yeah we’ve got Faber who looks amazing and could theoretically slot right into his spot, but after those top 4 we’re REALLY thin and Dumba on a hometown deal is probably better than anyone else they’d bring in from a player and a locker room standpoint.
TL;DR This isn’t a Kevin Fiala situation. Dude loves it here, GM loves him, if both sides want to make it work, they can. Dumba is better than a combined Merrill/Goligoski, and having Faber on the third pair isn’t the worst thing in the world for the defensive depth of this team.
