Cap next year is $83.5M but the Bruins have to allocate the Bergeron/Krejci bonuses of $4.5M, so I set the Bruins cap at $79M.

Using the Armchair GM feature on CapFriendly, I put together two Bruins rosters. First is for the « The top priority is to keep Bertuzzi! » people. His cap number this year is $4.75M but his actual salary is $5.25M. The fact that people love the guy shows that he isn’t taking a pay cut. I think as a UFA, he can get at least $6M, but I conservatively put him at $5.75M. I also signed Sway for $3M and Freddy for $2M. That’s only 18 players (out of a 23 man roster) and it’s already $5.5M over.

For the second picture, I added up to 22 players, using Providence. Now the team is $9M over the cap. Who do you want to get rid of? The team will not go below a 22 man roster so remember when you cut a guy, you need to replace him with someone back on the roster. Things like « Trade Greer » doesn’t help as he’s only making $765k. He’s the kind of guy you need on the roster. Same with Zboril. You move him, who are you replacing him with?

We can’t keep both Sway and Linus. So there’s some money there. And honestly, it’s rebuild time, so trade Marchand for any picks/prospects we can get. Krejci and Bergy need to retire as well. Those 4 moves gets out of cap jail and starts to set us up for the future.

If you want to keep sway ullmark goes and not going to lie he played himself into being a decent trade chip goalies are always needed. cant pay bertuzzi and taylor hall the third liner the same money either…..

  4. Grinning_Dog

Is Mike Reilly still buried in your numbers? I start with buying him out, that saves around 1.4 mil this year.

Then I trade Marchand. Let’s just rip the bandaid off and move to the new generation all at once. If you don’t want to trade him, you gotta trade Hall, but I’d keep the younger if the two who didn’t just have major hip surgery that clearly slowed him down.

Then I think realistically Gryz is the next move. Better value than Forbort so should bring back a better pick/prospect, and a higher cap hit so more space. Those three moves get you under the cap if you can get Bertuzzi to sign for the number you have (I think he’s going to want more though).

I would trade Ullmark, Hall, Forbert, and Zboril. Then bring up Lysell, Beecher, Lohrei, Ahcan. Re-sign Frederic and he centers a line. Beecher centers another. Sign Bertuzzi and Swayman to multi-year contracts, with more incentives in the coming years.

So I did my own version of this and I’m not happy but I’m not unhappy. Now the picks coming thing I don’t know if this would actually happen however I traded away:

    Marchand, Hall, Ullmark, Gryz, Forbort, Coyle, Reily and got back, 2023: 2 1’s, a 2 and a 4, 2024: a 1, 2 2’s and a 3, and 2025: a 2. So I recovered all of the draft picks we’ve traded away

Then I signed: Sean Monahan from Montreal as our future C1. I think this has to happen in real life. I signed JT compher, resigned Bert, signed Anthony Richards and Robert Hagg.

I retained Sway, Bussi, Fredrick, Lauko

It doesn’t let me include the bonuses for Bergy and Krejci so all in all I’ve got 2 mil in cap left, without signing a full 22/23 roster, I’ve got 21 so not bad.

You have to wonder what Swayman’s feeling is on the direction of this team. Does he want to potentially steer the ship of a contender, or ride as 1B until Ullmark’s contract is finished?

The goalie market seems surprisingly saturated moving forward with Hellebyuck of the Jets looking to potentially be traded given Winnipeg on the verge of imploding. Ullmark puts alot of question marks as far as playoffs go, especially with his career numbers in the postseason versus regular season, but he gets a pass in my eyes this year due to his injury and our underwhelming defensive performance. In short, unless Swayman takes a bridge deal with the expectation to sign once our contracts mellow out in the coming years, I don’t see how we can keep him.

I simply don’t see how we keep any of our deadline acquisitions without moving some serious capital. Hathaway was a ghost this playoffs, and I would rather save money and try to bring up Beecher in his place. People won’t simply take on Reilly’s contract so that leaves us to dump him with a pick or buy out his contract. OR **gasp** call him up to play on our 3rd pairing.

The elephant in the room is how well Bertuzzi meshed with our top 6. Him and pasta were phenomenal to watch. He’s going to get a BIG pay raise, and I truly don’t think it will be with us. He’s a top-line winger who will demand top-line pay, rightfully so. It’s the reason why Detroit was willing to part with him.

TLDR: Swayman needs to take a team friendly deal, play the kids, and keep 1 of the 3 deadline acquisitions

I think we should trade Ullmark to VGK. Gets him out of the conference, Vegas needs a goalie. They have plenty of picks and some good C/D prospects we can ask for in return. Frees up $5M and let’s us retain Sway as the younger goalie of the future.

  9. So basically we need to create 9mil in space to sign Bertuzzi? I just don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze.

I love Bertuzzi, but we need to focus on centers first to fill the void of Bergy and Krejci leaving.

Goodbye Forbort, Foligno, Ullmark. Sign Bertuzzi. Get picks for Ullmark. Use up and comings from Providence and I don’t think that we would have that bad of a team imo

  11. boringname101

Bertuzzi will ask for, and likely get, $7.5+ million on the free market. He wasn’t willing to take a paycut in Detroit and he won’t take a pay cut here. We can’t afford him without making the team worse in the process

    Edit: typo

  12. Suitable-Pea-8226

Bertuzzi is not staying on this team. He’s 28 and can sign (possibly) the last big contract of his career. He could probably get a 5yr/6-6.5mil which the Bruins can not give him. Especially if the Bruins are not going to be a contender, I don’t see anything motivating him to stay for a discount.

I think he’s fantastic on this team, he played with so much heart in the playoffs, but I just don’t see it happening. I will gladly eat my words if he somehow resigns for 5mil lol

Can we crowdsource the rest of his contract
