  1. Incredible series. Certainly the wing’s victory was overshadowed to some extent by the post-series announcement by Lemieux that he and Patrick Roy were longtime intimate gay lovers. I recall when the reporter asked Claude if he had said “gay” Lemieux responded affirmatively saying “oh extremely!” I understand the 2 of them are still together to this day! Per the Ave’s website they live in rural Vermont together where they breed award winning Corgis. Anyway all the best to the two of them this Pride month! 🏳️‍🌈 In my book they’re both absolute Queens!!

  2. I wasn’t alive during these times but my father made me a great wings fan and I love the old rivalry. Good content

  3. 5:41 "I know he's got big equipment, but that's not supposed to be flapping around like that." LOL!!!!

  4. After watching this it just goes to show you that today's game is to fast and so over coached.
The NHL needs to get rid of Bettman and bring back old school hockey and not award winning actors for players who can't take a normal check without a performance.
The jersey in my photo is a Kozlov #13 jersey and is signed by almost every player in this game for the wings.😁

  5. This just proves Patrick Roy’s dominance. Let’s be honest here the red wings had a team full of people who could put the puck away and im sure I’m not the only one to think “who do the avs even have besides Sakic,Lemieux & Roy”

  6. I stopped watching hockey when it got all snow flake. These were the glory-days. One man's opinion.

  7. Back when those games was on you wouldn’t leave your tv even if your house was on fire.
Also lidstrom standing in the way of the net from a slap shot is why he’s the best defenseman ever fearless.

  8. These highlights are amazing, I was 10 during these playoffs, so it was extra magical for me. So at the intro, looking back, Claude was right. Detroit got embarrased vs New Jersey. Then they have the best regular season of all time and what do they do? It takes them 6 games to beat the 8 seed Winnipeg Jets who didn't even have Selanne anymore, 7 games and double overtime just to beat St. Louis, and they couldnt play up to Colorado's level regardless of the dirty hit on Draper. That hit didn't win the series for them, they woulda finished Detroit off and beaten Florida even if Claude was kicked out of the playoffs. Guys like Dino Ciccarelli, he's an amazing scorer but he's not a great 2 way player. He's a liability defensively. Paul Coffey, he was literally the Norris winner in 95,,, he was still playing incredibly in 96, so it wasn't on him. Keith Primeau, very good tough player, very talented, but he wasn't quite as good of a scorer. You put Dino and Keith together and you get Brendan Shanahan. And losing Coffey sucked but, Lidstrom becoming the top offensive defenseman made up for that. And getting Larry Murphy filled that slot that Paul left. How ironic that on a year they rebuilt so much and played like dog shit during much of the regular season, was the year they finally won it. The entire league's average scoring went down in the mid 90s and Yzerman changed his entire playstyle to match that, just like New Jersey did. On top of all of that, all of the role players were reaching their prime. Maltby, Holmstrom, Draper, and McCarty, the big 4, the only men besides Lidstrom to win all 4 Cups with Detroit.

  9. It’s crazy that not all these guys had shorter careers like forsberg. These guys were putting it all out there every chance they got

  10. After all these years, I still get excited watching these games. Still get chills like it was yesterday!

  11. Thanks for making this. This was hockey at it's greatest. Both teams just awesome.

  12. As a Detroit native of Hockeytown, this was such an epic era to watch hockey. The Red Wings had such a dream team during this time and the Avalanche were solid opponents. It was so awesome because both teams hated each other and so did the fans. I used to go to games with my dad back then and somebody would always smuggle in an octopus and throw it onto the ice during the game lol.

  13. Both goalies played out out of their minds in this series. You cant deny Roys greatness, and that Vernon rose to every occasion. Hockey at its very finest

  14. Had to come here to clear my head after watching 5 minutes of soccer aka grown men trying to fake injuries

  15. 25 years later and it's still satisfying watching this beat down

  16. This shit was epic. There wont be anything like this ever again. Glad i was able to experience this as a kid.

  17. someone should do a 30 for 30 espn documentary for this rivalry but it wont happen because ESPN SUCKS NOW!

  18. Best rivalry ever! Even though we all know that Forsberg is the GOAT of ice hockey, Larionov was on fire that series! I forgot how lightweight he was. Like a rocket, almost like Bure.

  19. Watching this series 25 years later, I have to say I think it may be underappreciated what Tomas Sandstrom brought to this series. I don't think he scored a single point in this series, but he clearly got under the Avs skin, as evidenced by Mike Keane punching him from the bench in Game Two (or Three?) and the sequence starting at 42:18 ending with Ozolinsh giving him a two-handed slash out of frustration.

  20. Miss those years of hockey. Greatest rivalry in nhl history. Glad my wings got the better of the cheap shot, dirty, sneak bitches avalanche more often then not.
