How does our future change if they drafted Tkachuk?
We likely would have traded him or he would have left the same way he left the Flames, so don't get too unrealistic about what to expect. We have a bad history of development that has only recently started to change, but damn I want a fucking practice facility. But at least he let the Flames know and they theoretically got a good return for him.
We're lucky we didn't. The way he left Calgary would have happened to us. He did not want to play in Canada. I doubt we could have kept him. And our GM would not have been smart enough to pull off a fair trade. I think Calgary's GM did the best he could with the Tkachuk situation last year. Ours would have done much worse. Although in hindsight, it destroyed their team, but there was still hope there last year – I remember it clearly. And if Huberdeau was on the Canucks now . . . yikes.

Suspect part of the reason they didn't draft Matthew Tkachuk is because they suspected he would bolt for a low tax jurisdiction like Florida eventually. Character issues were always a concern with this guy. I'm good with it the way it turned out.
Thanks for using my comment. I had my doubts for a while myself but management's decision to keep Miller and move Horvat was vindicated by the results since Tocchet took over. Agree with Kyle, it turned out that Horvat was part of the problem. Changes needed to be made and what bigger change can you make than trading the Captain? I think this management is doing a good job acquiring talent to help now (Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Hronek) and prospects to help in the future (Räty, Bloom, and the great Arshdeep Bains!) and I'm more stoked for the future of this franchise than I've been in more than a decade.
