1. I hate to be one of those people that blame the refs for my teams loss but that non-high-sticking call on Jack Hughes which took away a 5 on 3 hurt. Not sure it would have changed the outcome of the game but it could have slanted the score a little in favor of the Devils.

  2. Devils played like s*** they forgot that they had a Playoff game tonight awful start and all I gotta say is Game 2 is must win because you don't wanna fall 0-2 coming back home and you got 1 shot in the first period pathetic

  3. Devils hardly tested the Hurricanes goaltender Anderson thru the whole game he had an easy game

  4. I didn’t like the officiating missed calls all around , I also felt that we didn’t have our legs they didn’t have that speed they had in game 7 , they also didn’t pass the puck well and didn’t protect schmid

  5. I think they just weren‘t mentally ready for that game. Is sometimes not that easy after a big game 7 win with all the emotions to focus on the new opponent.
But hey the good thing is all the worse came together in one game, bad calls, no physical game…
Will getting better in game 2. LGD

  6. Whatever cliche you want to use – they have to get punched in the mouth before they're ready to fight, they have to get their feet wet before they're ready to swim – it seems to apply to this team. I wish it wasn't so but that's the way it is.

Carolina plays a better structured game than anybody else in hockey and the Devils have to make quick, smart decisions or you're gonna get what happened last night. Nothing slick, nothing fancy, simpler and more direct is usually better.

The only good thing about last night is the Devils should now be better accustomed to Carolina's speed and intensity, the Canes are anything but slow, methodical and lazy. Time to adapt.

  7. Smith is TRASH! Luke will provide speed, skill, and energy to the back end. Give him the experience. We lost 5-1…we don't need to be concerned about a higher defensive liabilty. We need energy and offense! That alone will alleviate the Canes' pressure.

  8. I feel like there were some missed calls on both sides. Maybe a little more leaning toward the Devils but there were definitely missed calls on both ends. Like it or not that might come down to home ice. I think that the Devils need to find a way to get their star players away from Jordan Staal. He absolutely shuts star players down.

Timo Meyer will definitely help. Even if he is not 100%, just his presences will have an impact. That being said, Devils can't use any kind of injury excuse against the Canes. The Canes are missing Max Pacioretty, Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen. That is an entire first line in the nhl that is missing. If anyone has a injury excuse, they do.

  9. We also have to realize that Carolina is missing a few of their clutch players but are getting it done with the next man up mentality. Timo not being in the lineup should not matter. NJ is much better than this. They need to regroup and come out buzzing on Friday night…..and Trey, you didn't want to put in Akira Scmid in the last series. Stop babying the youth. Luke Hughes came out of the Frozen Four. His defensive game can't be worse than Graves. His skating, puck movement, and offensive ability is a lot better than Graves. Plus look at the league and see that rookie defensemen, who also came right from college tournament were inserted into the playoffs and are performing well.

  10. Trey, let's face it the officiating in the NHL sucks big time and gets worst by the day. No NHL brass does anything to correct this problem. Some Officials are just atrocious and does not attempt to get better at their jobs. Shameful.

  11. Im sorry to say but the Devils need Luke Hughes against Carolina in game 2. That first period was ugly, and I blamed it on missing Timo, but also having just one rest day between series. This was the most lopsided periods in a playoff game I have seen in a long time. Should’ve been 3-0 after the first if not for John Marino blocking that shot into an empty net. I was not angry like game 1 against the Rangers, I was like let them beat us 10-0…it’s only ONE game.

  12. Definitely affected the game a little bit, but we looked awful and were going to lose this game either way.

  13. Theirs absolutely no excuse to blame the refs last night, NJ wasn't ready for that insanity and played like crap the second the opening puck dropped in the first period. They deserved to lose, sorry to say it but it's beyond true. They'll be ready for game 2 Friday night.

  14. Hitting someone into the boards isn't a boarding it's a check. Hitting someone face first into the boards is a boarding. The first two calls of the game were awful, total phantom calls. There was missed called both ways. The Devils used to hit like crazy it's strange see them so speed focused.

  15. We did not deserve that win and we probably would’ve lost but the refs made sure there was no chance of coming back

  16. it’s honestly kinda sad how it’s gonna be a series when the canes are missing svechnikov, pacioretty, and teravainen

  17. Kind of knew Schmid will take a stinker. Was that way all season. 3-4 great games and then an absolute stinker. Lack of experience I'd say.

  18. I kinda get why the devs came out so flat they did it in game 1 and 2 with the rangers if that didn't happen I would say they spent all there energy in game 7 and it is definitely hard to come out with the game 7 intensity for game 1 at Carolina game 2 and 3 will tell the tale of how this series is gonna go one thing for sure the devs are getting raped by the refs so far in the playoffs it's so one-sided it's pathetic every game the rangers won they had a huge power play advantage it needs to stop

  19. The Canes shut down the offense early on. Can't win games off the refs. Devs were not ready. Plain and simple.

  20. You are crying about missed Ref Calls??? Seriously your gems lost 5-1 had nothing to do with the Refs. Get real Dummy
