Love Mayfield, but c'est la vie. Lou was too stupid to trade him 2 deadlines in a row.
I like him. Big body, but sometimes he takes some bad penalties. Hate to see him go and he really wants to stay.
I love Mayfield's game. If Bode Wilde had continued to develop, it would have been the natural time for him to transition in, but that didn't happen.
In a pinch, Hutton could play or put Aho on his offside, but I think Lou will go out and pick up a vet defenceman on the cheap – if he's still running the ship.
If Mayfield comes in with something like 4 years @ $3m or less, you have to take Scotty back. A couple of years of Luke Schenn at under $1m would be okay too. Other than that, there isn't really much on the UFA market that fills the Isles' need at RD3 with a similar style of game to Mayfield. Mayfield has been playing at a discount contract so it is hard to ask him to take another significant hometown discount; especially considering he could get north of $3 on the open market.
Any thoughts on the Fulp kid that joined Bridgeport late in the season from W. Michigan. He was the assistant captain, looks a bit like Mayfield, similar build (6'3", 210 pounds, and he wears # 24 > #27 in Bridgeport). He picked up 2a and +2 in 3 games to close out the Bridgeport season.
If he wanted to stay he would have re-signed. Prime ufa's want to max their worth on the open market so unless lou wants to pay thru the nose to keep mayfield he's gone. Probably not taking a cheap home discount to stay. Lou bobbled that one at the tdl. Oil and la were interested. Now that leaves a hole on blue line. Trade value that could have brought much needed picks wasted. And it is re-tool time. Don't see how lou navigates thru that before it turns into all out re-build. A re-tool would take a daring trade of a barzal, dobson, nelson-someone with trade value-to bring back some young skill/speed/picks. Once the wheels fall off no one is non expendable. Lee, jpg, palmieri, bailey, id line have virtually no trade value. Wahlstrom can't even be sold off high. Pelech would have trade value to a team in need of a shut down d man like wings. Plus sorokin ufa status at tdl. The '24 tdl will show if isles are in a re-tool or full blown re-build. If isles are in re-build get as many picks as possible for '24-'25 drafts, hope for misa '25, and hope like hell lou doesn't fkn trade '24-'25 firsts away. Maybe lee can be dealt to a team with cap room looking for a big body up front if isles eat some salary like hawks who now get bedard. az. only wants dead weight ltir deals with a pick attatched to it so not a lot of lee suitors out there. And isles plain and simple need a 21st century gm to lead them thru the inevitable re-tool/re-build on the horizon. Do like yzerman did in detroit. Trade for picks to teams that over value a player. Traded mantha for a first/second plus vrana. Got two seconds for anders a/washed up green from holland. Got two firsts for hronek/bertuzzi. Let all bad contracts expire (took 3 years) while signing vets to cheap one year deals to give him option to move at tdl if needed. Didn't even need to move to get roy seider at six in '20 draft. That is some scouting right there. And not afraid to make a daring trade like sergachev for drouin in tb. Habs would take a refund on that deal about now. And at tdl if yzerman couldn't get larkin/bertuzzi signed they would be moved. Larkin re-signed. Bert wasn't and was moved. That's pro-active gm'ing. Lou should have done that with varly/mayfield at tdl. Ill-fated playoff run be damned.
