Nylander is the only one that I will ever cut some slack. Dude has received the most vitriol of anyone, gone through xenophobic / bigoted comments about his heritage, and is always criticized the most by media generally yet he’s never afraid of a big game or being in a big moment and doesn’t let the pressure faze him. He also has better stats than either Matthews or Marner in elimination games, despite usually getting shittier circumstances (lack of PP1 time, having to play C when Kadri got suspended, getting double shifted on the fourth line, having to carry JT etc.) and making around 40% less in salary. I want to keep him around for exactly those reasons.
Willy says this. Asked why, he replies because you have to play your best.
Marner on the other hand still pretending they don’t pay attention to outside noise/pressure.
Willy constantly takes shit and responds. He doesn’t have to be coddled.
I’d love to love Marner and have him be a lifer but the way they handle pressure is horrible.

Marner reminds me of a preppy villain in those 1980s teenage/college movies. The guy that thinks he is so hot and is so easy to hate. In the end their arrogance catches up with them.

Fun. Really. Well, I am glad Nylander takes so much pleasure in losing. How many goals does he have this round? Zero. That his how much fun I am having.

I’m convinced that this is the right attitude to have in this market and part of the reason why Willy is a consistent playoff performer. If you don’t perform well under insane pressure (like Marner or most of the Leafs, for example), you gotta do what you can to take the pressure off yourself. Willy never seemed to take things too seriously or personally. I think that attitude has pissed off fans in the past, but frankly if it makes him perform better, I say all the power to him.
I don’t think the problem with certain players (like Marner) is that they don’t care– I think they care too much, get in their heads, and get down on themselves. They don’t need to put more pressure on themselves, they need to lighten the fuck up and have fun. I think that’s the mental key to unlocking a better performance from this group.
