Other than it being the last home opener at Olympia, I wouldn't call this a "Classic". But I was there that night, and it's always good to see a game from the "Old Red Barn". Calder runner up Brian Propp had 2g 2a to lead the Flyers. Philadelphia was 4-1 coming into the game (having won their last 2) and would set a league record for most games (35) without a loss (25-0-10), They would not lose their 2nd game until Jan 7, 1980. Sure do miss Olympia Stadium! Thanks for posting!
Good afternoon! Excuse me – do you have any matches of the super series of the 70s where the Wings of the Soviets played – except for the game with the Buffalo Sabres. I'm just looking at the goals from some matches. Sincerely yours!!!
this game shows that every dog has its day, Philadelphia traditionally never wins in Detroit, but here the orange and black embarrassed the motor city.
Was the old Olympia regulation NHL ice? I recall some of the old rinks were smaller (Boston Garden, Aud, Chicago Stadium) I've heard MLG also had some irregularities. Olympia ice looks a bit smaller than the standard 200×85
Hard to believe Detroit moved into the brand new Joe Louis Arena a few months later in Dec '79…and it's been replaced by Little Caesars already…time flies
I always associated Larry Osterman with Tigers games on PASS. I had no idea that he used to do Red Wings games too! This broadcast pre-dates the creation of PASS by a few years. I know Bruce Martin & Sid Abel did the games for WKBD during this period, were Osterman & Redmond the B-team for WKBD broadcasts? Or was this a different Detroit-area station doing this game?
