So pretty much as expected. Our overall forward core is legitimately good, outside of needing a 3C, but we’re lacking a true 2nd D pairing
You can see why the belief is more that we need to fill gaps rather then blow things up.
Looks like 3rd line center and most of the defense needs to improve and we all know that. Another stand out is we have a sea of Granlunds on the wings and we need to find good 2nd line wingers (hopefully Pods/Hogs)
This is a really useful yard stick to understand what we need to do to reach contender status. And we have some work to do and it will take some time. But at least a few of the important pieces are there, and our top six forwards stack up pretty well overall.
What are these « net ratings » based on…?
Are we at the point with advanced stats where we’re just trusting whatever someone decides to throw on a graph or table without any criticism or backup required?
How in the world is Demko worse than the average goalie left in the final 4? The only one I’d take over him is Oettinger. Bobrovsky is playing out of his mind right now, but he hasn’t always. He’s been extremely inconsistent the last few years and his cap hit is 10 frickin million dollars.
Garland with boeser and Miller should form a competent 2nd line. Hoglander and podkolzin should be staples to the 3rd line, but it needs a better center.
Defence and 3C are our main issues. Imo we need another top 6 forward, 3C and top 4 defender.
Long way to go still.

Basically we have a solid top 3 and top goalie when healthy?

I’m not saying the Canucks are good, we’re certainly not. But people forget an in-form Demko and this is a playoff team. In other words, we’re not as bad as people think.
Basically if we buyout OEL, trade for a 3rd line Center and let Myers contract run out or trade him we aren’t that far off with the right pieces added. This also doesn’t take into consideration maybe Hirose is a great pick up. But we still need a couple bigger dmen too.
Watching the playoffs just makes me realize how much these stats don’t matter. It’s just about what group of guys actually play as a team.
Edmonton and TO can load up and become one team and I hardly think it would matter in today’s game.
Florida and Carolina especially have total buy-in. Everyone has a role. Tons of character guys. Everyone’s stepping in front of shots, being pests, making aggressive plays that normally would be penalities in regular season. Just smart playoff hockey.
Very little top-end talent but tons of depth. More and more it seems you win with like 7 or 8 30-50 point guys, and maybe 1 or 2 overachievers + calm goaltending.
Even the Stars and Knights are closer to that than most teams, but IMO Florida and Carolina are the ones playing winning playoff hockey, too bad only one can make it. Honestly, we seem closer to whatever Edmonton and TO have built. It’s fun to watch when it works, but I don’t think that style stands much of a chance come playoff time.

I had to write ‘below average’ way too many times there…
sort of annoying that theres these random charts with statistics that are abbreviated without any context as to what the stat is, or the context of it. We’re just supposed to see +2.09 and pretend like we know what it means

So compared to the good teams Vancouver stacks up like:
1st line +1
2nd line -5
3rd line -19
4th line -4
1st D pair -7
2nd D pair -10
3rd D pair -8
So need to improve like 5 forwards and 4 D without sacrificing the rest of the team, while having no cap space or prospects. Good luck with that. This team is doomed to stay in the middle until the good players get old or choose to leave.
