Shot himself in the foot …guys not mentally stable …NHL managements talks …I bet my bottom dollar no organization pokes dubas with a stick now
Writing was on the wall for this Dubas guy, Speeza leaving clear indicator there is trouble in the front office. However Player and GM there is no loyalty. Mathews will be traded before July 1st. Marner same, JT gone. Nylander is the face of the franchise. Front office will bring in older pedigree cup run experience. Shanny will revert back to a Dryden tested and true method of getting through the rounds.
Shanahan needs to go as well.
Looks like those jabs shaved off 30 years from Kyper. Hard times.
Dubas should never have been put in an NHL GM chair – That's on Shanahan… I don't see teams banging at Kyle's door based on his track record. The Leafs drafted Auston, Mitch, Willy and had pieces like Rielly in place and only saw round two this year against a TB team that outplayed them and clearly were not bringing it cause they already had not one but two Cups to admire in the last few years – This as Crag Button stated, has been an epic failure.
Angus glen has claimed another victim.
Ordinarily I'd point out that he's made plenty of money etc etc, but then I remembered he lives in Toronto so probably has yet to pay off the mortgage on his 1800 sq foot house.
I think Marc Bergevin would be a perfect replacement for Dubas. He's got experience, and built a really good Montreal team that eliminated us in the first round. I don't like Brad Treliving, though. He'd be the same or worse to me, that's my opinion.
This is how millennials roll. He faked his way into the gig and made bank. Whoever hires Dubass, will be crowned the new Emperor Dumbass.
He’s 37 and a multimillionaire. I really wouldn’t be worrying about where Dubas ends up next.
Just a reminder to everyone: Sportsnet is owned by Rogers who also owns the Maple Leafs, so don't expect a fair portrayal of what took place here…
The grumpy boomer on the right
How dare you question us
Lol
I blame the agent
Dubas made a fool of himself. Bye and good riddance.
pencil pusher for lax leadership
Dubas is gone. Seems to have overplayed his hand. Shanahan was a a warrior class player. After losing a playoff round and publicly wining about how tough the job is and deferring to your wife as the decision maker, that would have had to be the end for Dubas in Shanahan's eyes. Not reading the room and having your agent inflate an ask that already accommodated months of negotiated 'must haves' is, in any business, interpreted as bad faith.
Sports is big business but at the end of the day it is just hockey. Anything other than Dubas stating "Tough to stomach the loss but instead, I focus on the awesome organization we have built, which anybody lucky enough to be a part of, knows is 1st class. We have a strong core of character guys who like me, want to win. We make moves to add depth and talent and I believe each year we have gotten better. We will continue to do so and if the leadership of MLSE continues to have faith in me, I am committed to doing anything I can to bring home a Cup to Toronto".
#1 priority IMHO is goaltending. The young guy Woll looked good when called upon and might have the secret sauce but Samsonov was often caught out of position and gave up too many weak goals. Move Samsonov.
Defense was outmatched with both Florida opponents and the Leafs need their Coffey, Leetch, Lidstrom anchors to transition up ice without turnovers. Emphasis on a combination of speed and nastiness.
In terms of trade bait up front I think you need to shake things up.
Not necessarily wholesale changes but certainly a blockbuster with at least one of Tavares, Marner or Mathews needing to go. A Losing attitude is a virus that needs to be cut out.
Edmonton went all in this year and are also out in the 2nd round to Vegas, so perhaps there is a blockbuster McDavid and or Draissaitl for Mathews and or Marner. An explosive move that could shake up both rosters.
Another move is Mathews and Samsonov for the #1 pick with Chicago. Do something bold to grab a potential generational talent and clear cap space.
Is a coaching change warranted? Perhaps. Keep in mind NHL coaches earn their chops through experience and just blowing the coach out does not change a losing culture.
A change could be positive and candidly now more likely but only if a world class guy is ready to step in.
Joel Quenneville comes to mind. He took a bullet for what happened in Chicago but is a proven winner.
Now it gets interesting because Stan Bowman, who won 3 Cups in Chicago (with Quenneville a former Leaf) could come in as a package deal. Shanahan with his relationships with the NHL HO could smooth things over for re-reinstatement for both.
Thoughts?
Amateur organization doing amateur things. Reilly said he couldn't believe the perks the players got. It's time to throw out the perks and make EVERY PLAYER earn it. Look at the Florida series. The coach was so badly out – couched it was farcical. Why is Keith still there? Look at Brindamour, Trotts, Bowman, etc. These great coaches are at the big show every year. WHY! It's because they are great coaches. The Big 4 players disappeared in round 2 because they weren't playing for anything but summer vacation.
The Leafs are a business and are very successful. The Cup isn't necessary in Toronto. The stadium and watering holes are full no matter how bad the team is. Dubas has been stealing a check for five years. The most important position on the ice is goalie. Dubas is oblivious to that.
Too bad the Head line doesn't say Shanahan is Fired!!!! Hire back Mark Hunter PLease!!
Shanahan needs to go too. Nothing but playoff embarrassment on his watch. The coach should be an automatic firing, not even worth discussing. When was the last time the Leafs had good goaltending? Time to clear the decks.
They had a deal until the Leafs flamed out in the playoffs, then things changed.
Brendan Shannahan isn't that intelligent needs Kyle dubas press conference to determine his decision.
Totally agree with Kyper. He threw his family under the bus
We all have an opinion on what is wrong or why can't the Leafs win more than they lose. At the end of the day, the Leafs are always fun to watch and they will continue to be fun to watch. Toronto is a great sports city regardless of the sport! Because it is, the media scrutinizes the sports team more than other cities. Toronto is a world-class city that wants world-class sports teams. That's fair. I always want to see Canadian sports teams do well. Especially Calgary and or Edmonton. Hockey is a great sport pretty much at all levels of play. There's always next year!
Toronto sports fans keep your chins up! The Leafs did better than most of their rivals. Winning is tough at the professional level! That's probably why fans idolize winners so much!
Dubas obviously has a back up offer for 2024/2025. He said there is lots of stress in T.O. He made an offer to stay, they didn't accept, so now he'll go to plan B.
Dubas said Plan B is to take a year off then take a job elsewhere.
Why does everyone think living in T.O. is the cream of the crop?
You know why Paul Maurice quit in Winnipeg?
Because he already had a secret offer from Florida.
You know why Dubas asked for more money in T.O?
Because he already has an offer from a US team.
Dubas lost the plot
Dubas isn't worried 😂 he get a job right away. Kyper and Bourne towing company line throwing him under the bus.
Kyle screwed Kyle!
Sure Nick. It really hurts to be out of work with millions in the bank. Kudos to Kyle … he really did deserve a big pay increase for winning one round in 9 years.
I'm not sure what Maple leafs fans don't understand here. And before you say you are from Buffalo what do you know I would reconsider. Buffalo fans know their sports. Regular season success means absolutely nothing. Sure, the Leafs have had great regular seasons under Dubas but playoff hockey is so much different than regular season hockey. Over an 82 game, 6 month schedule it's impossible to get your opponent's best game night in and night out. This is how the Leafs were able to get away with it with their talented roster. It is totally different in the playoffs. You will get your opponents best game EVERY game and this is where skill does you little good. You need players with both skill and grit to get through. Dubas was so attached to his core 4 and tried to insulate them with gritty players and that model doesn't work in the playoffs. Even I could have done a better job than Dubas. Ask yourself, how many gritty and talented players (Mathew Tkatchuk for example) does Toronto have on their roster?? I can't think of one. It's no surprise to me Toronto was a 1st round exit 3 of the last 4 seasons.
Shanahan should have had this wrapped up months ago. Either extend Dubas in writing or start shopping for a replacement GM. Leaving this to the last second was surprisingly inept.
Get over Toronto;Toronto.
He has the Penguins job-was likely on par with salary offered to him by Toronto. So he staged this entire week… playing family card… then coming back with an outlandish request for higher salary. It he got the salary request then he won having a high pressure job but getting paid a king’s ransom. If it got rejected and then let go-well it gives him the “right” to go get another job that he already had lined up and didn’t have to say I am choosing this other organization. Instead he had to go since Toronto fired him. Dubas is not a good general manager, but he is an excellent Machiavellian individual.
Its cool the pens will take him. And win a cup with him
The dead fish starts to smell from the ĥead first get rid of shanahan
Guys, think about this. I talk to my family and say, there's going to be a lot of sacrifice to win the Stanley Cup. Family says, well how much are they paying you to sacrifice your family and mental health ? Family says, that's it …. if they want you to sacrifice your family and miss time that you'll never get back, you need to ask for more. It starts with family and they want more for the sacrifice. Call it money, call it whatever you want, it was about how much $$$ is worth the family sacrifice. The agent did a crap job and Dubas should have spoken to Shanahan directly, not just an email. Something was lost in translation, and the lame agent didn't do his job. Too bad so sad … life goes on, and both Shanahan and Dubas lose out.
Great insights
As a non Leafs fan I don't see how Dubas is made out to be the scapegoat here. The Shanaplan has clearly not worked. The decisions to cage into overpaying certain players did not work. Sure Dubas has some blame in perhaps how this was handled but Dubas being branded as the only scapegoat is negligent at best and vapid at worst. The board's allegiance to Shanahan is going to cost them. He has been there in that position for nearly 10 years. Shanahan Dubas Keefe and either Marner or Nylander have all got to go.
Dubas has a handshake deal with someone else. He wanted out of Toronto.
It's called spilling your candy in the lobby.
I don’t know enough about their organization to comment on those issues, but seeing him during the playoffs and arguing with the fans was just really cringeworthy to watch. I felt a kind of second hand embarrassment for him and the fans. I felt that should have just walked away before that exchange occurred. It wasn’t professional at his level.
Dubas created a beautiful 'corporate team' based (strictly) on analytics. Razzle dazzle plays, politically correct, erring on the side of wimpy, etc. But that kind of team is not really a playoff game. So sad that he was ditched by Shanny the corporate lap dog. I will be looking forward to seeing where team builder Dubas winds up next.
Here's the rest of the story Shanny didn't tell you.
He told Dubas to empty his office immediately and had Dubas escorted off the property, probably by cops.
You don't think Dubas is still doing work for the Leafs until June 30 do you?
Shanny then told Spezza to resign or he was being fired that day, too. Shanny didn't bother to tell you about this part though.
Then Shanny held a presser to tell everyone that he didn't bother dealing with Dubas' agent, as Shanny was required to do, but, instead, Shanny drove to Ford Performance Center to deal with Dubas directly.
Shanny then billed the Leafs for the gas money to drive to and from Ford Performance Center.
