  1. I won't pretend I thought that was a great contract, because it wasn't. The fact that Draisaitl turned into the deutsch dangler, doesn't change the fact that he was highly unproven when Chiarelli offered him that contract.

So, at that time, yes, it was a terrible contract. Today, it's obviously a bargain. Nobody can tell the future though, and that contract could have aged absolutely terribly, just as easily as it aged amazingly.

Anyone who sits here and tells you they thought this was a great contract, is either an idiot, or a liar. Take your pick of which.

  2. Nurse's contract is an absolute joke. $9,000,000/yr!?
He'd be unlikely to make it into most teams top 4 d-men.

  3. I had seen Draisaitl’s junior league performances so I was not surprised at all

  4. Eberle was as beloved as Nuge. Hall was always a great player but his name was also constantly in some not so great rumours around the city lol.

  5. Ray F is a clown🤡🤡🤡🤡. He makes a lot of questionable comments and love to state the obvious.

  6. Dont think you understand how bad the world championship is this year big guy

  7. 1:32 That comment at the bottom is good. Unproved. That's really what he was. Would've honestly expected a bridge deal after his ELC

  8. Honestly, I think Draisaitl is probably going to take "less to win". Just like McDavid demanded a million less, I think Draisaitl could as well

  9. At the time of his new signing, I didn’t have a problem with it. I thought it was reasonable sign. Especially the season he had. I watched him all season and even got his jersey that year. Mcdavid wanted him on the team and took 12mil instead of max amount for a player which he easily could of. But wanted cap space for other hood players like drai

  10. Igor Shesterkin being on a $5.66mil deal for 2 more years is a pretty great value contract.

  11. With the way the league is run and structured and with the crummy playoff structure set by GARY BUTTHEAD … it’s becoming difficult for generational superstars to win championships or dynasty’s like I witnessed in the 80’s and even 90’s. They not old just hanging and chilling 😊

  12. I definitely said he was getting underpaid and he was going be the 2nd best player in the league soon. Yep, I saw it coming. Nah I 100% agreed with Ray Ferraro I think most of us (without a crsytal ball) felt the same way

  13. Not going to lie I was pumped when it was signed. But I’m an Oiler fan who always loved Drai. I know it got a ton of hate at the time.

  14. Draisaitl was dope inn the 2017 playoffs so how could that be an overpay? Of course his rookie season 2014-2015 was very quiet being in and out playing about half the season but the next 2 yrs after he gradually rose to stardom and became worth every penny

  15. wetsideal is not the 2nd best plyaer in the world, not even close, and this obnoxious johnny hockey isnt in the least bit entertaining and laffs like an idiot.

  16. Personally, I wasn't worried about the deal as all signs were pointing to the Oilers having a Crosby/Malkin dynamic in McDavid/Draisaitl.

  17. Drai or Matthews? I know which one I'd always pick and it's not the one who always disappears in the playoffs.

  18. Nthan Mackinnon took less and then Won a Cup and then got paid where as the core 4 got paid and who cares about the cup

  19. As an Avs fan, I've long said that the "I'll take less to win" stuff, from Nate, was always nonsense.

When we signed him, to the 7×6.3m contract, that was considered to be a bit of a gamble at the time. In fact, that made him our highest paid player, for the first year of his contract. Also, among his peers (the top picks in the 2013 draft) – he got the second highest contract of his draft class (Monahan was, deservedly, the highest contract). Nate has given interviews, about this time, where he talks about how he, himself, thought that "this was the player he was". As in, he wasn't going to be top-line in the NHL – he thought he'd be, at best, a 2nd liner. However, he did something that most players don't. He invested in himself. He hired one of the top hockey trainers, personally, and remade himself. He saw a sports psychologist and hired a nutrionist. And when everything came together – he turned into one of the very best players in the NHL and his contract became THE best value one in the entire league.

However, at no point did he ever take a discount "to win".

Just like Draisaitl – MacKinnon's contract was high, for the time, and was considered a bit of a gamble for the team. In a cap world – teams that gamble, like this, can achieve great benefit when they come off…..

  20. Probably not as much value as Draisaitl, but Tage Thompson just scored 94 points on a deal that paid him $1.4 million, and is starting a new contract at just $7.14 million for seven more seasons, and could be a consistent 40-goal, 90-100 point player.

  21. And now talk about the NURSE contract in comparison, 9.25 for that bum??? (-6 and 1 assist BTW)

  22. He was 20 years old coming of a near ppg season. Why would anyone think that's a bad deal. Everyone knows the cap always goes up.

  23. Even before Huberdeau’s 10.5 million x 8 years and Weegar 6 million x 8 years kicks in, we are talking about the 2 worst contracts in the NHL today.

  24. Draisaitl contract is a steal, but that gets cancelled out by the atrocious Nurse 9 million deal that Holland handed out. Nurse is medicore, can’t defend, poor skating, turnover machine. There is no sugar coating it, he’s a third pairing d man on a goid team

  25. “i’ll take less to win” THEY WON. no shit he’s gonna take more. what lol ☠️

  26. As an OIlers fan, I thought it was an overpay. Now, like you said, its such a value contract. But at the time, it was still an overpay. Could you imagine if we signed Draisaitl for $6.5M for 8 – the number he was averaging at the time? Haha and very good point about MacKinnon… Hilarious actually

  27. Peter Chiarelli also signed Kelfbom 4.167M for 7 years right after his entry-level contract expired. It would be one of the best-value contracts if Klefbom did not retire due to injury.

  28. Crosby still makes 8.7mil per. That’s still a value to this day. But yea this deal is better cuz he’s younger. Insane I’m just curious when Sid isn’t worth that and he’s so superstitious that he’ll only play for that lol

  29. Hindsight is 20/20. You give a guy a big contract and pray to the hockey gods the player doesn't become Scott Gomez , Alexi Yashin or Alexander Daige .

  30. Mackinnon deserved a pay raise cause he at least can win a cup, mcdavid and Draisaitl should get a pay decrease in my opinion.
    Change my mind
