So it is Shanny who is willing to die with this core then.

  2. IAmTheBredman

So we really walked dubas out for not signing the day they offered him a deal just to run it back? I don’t get it.

  3. Spiceb0x

So dumb. You just told whoever your new gm is “we tell you who to trade”.

  4. stephenlipic

Who even is the core 4? Matthews Tavares Marner Nylander? We don’t count Rielly right?

Or was the core 4 set up prior to Tavares coming on board and it is actually Rielly Matthews Marner Nylander…

  5. 931634

I’ll believe it when I see it …

  6. Flashy_Ferret_1819

I was told Santa Claus was real.

Of course they told Matthews, Marner, and Nylander they weren’t going anywhere. Exactly what else would he say? Tell them they out? Good luck negotiating with them or other teams then.

  7. Hungry_Door7916

    Stupid move imo

Can’t keep running it back. Should trade 1 of them at least. Keep matthews/nylander and see what offers we get for Tavares/marner.

We should only bring them back if we get back garbage offers

What’s the point of hiring a GM at this point? There’s no great candidates, there isn’t enough time to get their shit together between now and July 1st and Shany is already making the big decisions and Pridman can manage the team.

  9. LeafsChick

But how legit is this? Does he call them each and say “well not sure how this is gonna play out…don’t book any late summer tee times in TO!”

  10. LeafsRealist

That’s what Masai told DeRozan too.

  11. sharabhi

How could one reporter confirm this is true? Either from Shanahan directly (which he would never admit) or from each individual player in the core echoed the exact same thing somehow (which seems like a stretch). There is no logical reason for Shanahan to start declaring these promises. Seems like Toronto media just fabricating/stretching the truth again.

  12. 1columbia

This is just regurgitation of the CJ report and means nothing really in the grand scheme of things.

  13. moviemerc

I can’t see this being the case at all it doesn’t make any sense to do this. Even if you think you want to keep them all your basically handcuffing your incoming GM right out of the gate.

  14. ElephantShell34

Who is going to want this GM job knowing at the end of the day it will be Shanny calling the shots? Why doesn’t he just step up to be GM then if he has such a strong vision?

Feels like we’re looking at the worst of both worlds here – Dubas out so he can’t fine tune his vision and the new guy will be handcuffed by Shanny’s demands.

  15. theguyishere16

Im fine with that but for the millionth time Keefe better be gone though. Run back the roster but try a new voice.

  16. reggierock2010

Lol some people take these reports as 100% truth. It’s actually pretty comical.

  17. Mulder1562

Don’t believe this. They are at least taking calls. Even Masai told Demar he wasn’t moving him till the Spurs called. We just aren’t going to give them away for a bag of pucks. Like I’ve been hearing offers online like LA Kings giving Byfield and Kempe plus a pick for Matthews. That is a good joke. A 60 goal #1 center, hart trophy candidate every year he plays for a guy who can barely crack the lineup and a 1 time 40 goal scorer.

  18. MetalPunk125

This is the right call if true.

  19. BuffytheBison

To be honest this core should’ve been shaken up after Montreal. You had those back-to-back series against Boston, the series against Columbus, and the 3-1 collapse to Les Habs to make a good case that this core wasn’t going to do it for you in the playoffs. Sometimes, just a change of dynamic in the room gets your team over the hump. Look what happened to the Isles AFTER Tavares came here lol back-to-back conference finals apparences

  20. Throwawayaway23848

He’s gonna LOVE it when Matthews leaves for nothing

  21. BackTo1975

Problem is this isn’t the answer, either. You have to react to what message you’re getting from the players at this point, especially Matthews. Telling these guys they’re not going to be dealt doesn’t mean anything.

For example. Matthews says he’s not re-signing this summer and he’s going to revisit everything next spring/summer as he doesn’t want to be distracted during the season. What do you do then?

And that’s a real possibility given the turmoil around the team right now and how he might want to see how things go over the next season before committing to a new contract with the Leafs. I’m Matthews, I’m not rushing into anything right now with so much up in air about GM, coach, overall direction of the franchise. This is a turning point for the team and Matthews has to consider that before re-upping.

  22. carletondabare

I mean Tavares is unmoveable, and Nylander is lights out in the playoffs. And you gotta think a 26-year-old MVP center and a 26-year-old Selke-nominee still have time to figure it out.

If there’s no real deal out there that makes sense, running back the core 4 isn’t the worst idea.

  23. 123jazzhandz321

The core four is Marner, Matthews, Tavares and Rielly. If you think about it Nylander isn’t on any of the promotional material at the rink. It’s clear he’s the out one out, sucks but if there’s a trade for Weegar or Toews for Nylander that legitimately makes the team stronger at D than 90% of the league.

  24. Coolsbreeeze

Why in the fuck are we trading just for the sake of trading. Trade only if you get a good deal in return. This isn’t NHL 2023 where you can do whatever you want.

  25. toronto_programmer

More evidence that the autonomy ask from Dubas was hinting that he wanted to move one or more of the core guys in the off-season and Shanny wasn’t buying in.

For better or worse looks like we ride or die with this crew for the next few years.

No idea if that is because Shanny believes they can do it, is worried for his job, or the board is just happy with the regular season success though …

  26. areu_kiddingme

This was my dubas conspiracy theory, he wanted to move one of them out and shanny blocked it and let him go. On the plus side it helps with the matthews situation

  27. yt1nifnI

Here’s the thing the only one of the core four that you entertain moving is JT and he has a no trade cause unless Matthews gives you indication that he’s looking to go elsewhere. They’re pretty much stuck. I don’t see them getting fair market value back in any Marner trade nor do I see teams thinking he’s going to be worth 12 13 million dollars a season on his next contract. Morgan Riley is highly respected in the locker room and he showed up in the playoffs. I’m not a fan of his contract nor his overall body of work in the last two seasons but he’d also be tough to move. Matt Murray is obviously a candidate to be traded but you’re going to have to attach something to any potential trade to sweeten the pot.

The Leafs are in a very tough position. They’re good but not good enough. They have some glaring holes up and down the lineup and plugging random vets into those holes hoping that they can somehow make it work season after season doesn’t seem to be working. The Leafs are built for the regular season and not the playoffs and that’s been the MO since this whole new era of Leafs hockey began. Marner just doesn’t like the physicality of the playoffs and he shuts down. He’s the spark plug that drives our offense you take him out of the equation and the wheels begin to fall off. So what do you do?
