Gillis has a law degree, helped lead the Canucks to having one of the first analytics departments in the NHL, led the Canucks to 2 Presidents Trophies, and a Stanley Cup Final, and because the NHL is an old boys club, he can’t get another opportunity.

Instead, you have what are essentially high school drop outs like Ron Hextall handing a business plan he frantically scribbled on a notebook to the Pens ownership group. This is 100% a real story btw, it was published in The Athletic today
I don’t believe there are a lot of « best for every situation » GMs out there, but in terms of the available GMs who have taken a underperforming but talented core and gotten the most out of them, Gillis is probably the best choice. I have no idea why anyone would even interview Brad Treliving.
Elliotte Friedman reported Dubas was seeking more autonomy and Shanahan probably felt threatened by that. Also, Chris Johnston reported Shanahan has since told the core forwards that no one’s getting moved, meaning that decision won’t be left to Dubas’ successor. So basically, the new GM is Shanahan’s puppet and won’t be able to act without getting all their moves approved from above.
There is zero chance Gillis accepts that situation.
Sounds like Shanahan wants a puppet. That’s not Gillis’ style.
We’ll sweeten the package with elite coach Travis Green and towering D man Tyler Meyers
For a team that’s so mentally weak, a guy like MG could help. He did have a lot of sports science and sports psychology elements implemented in the Canucks team way before it was a big thing in the mainstream North American sports market
Shanny is looking for a yes-man. Zero chance Gillis will accept that role. Dubas is gone because he wanted more autonomy.
Agent Bieksa setting up a plan to destroy the leafs from within. Genius.
Gillis is the goat.
No. Hire Benning.
Gillis also screwed over the canucks future with that run. He went out with a big bang.
