William Nylander is coming to the Caps with Spencer Carbery
Dudley lived behind my buddy's house in East Amherst, NY when he coached the Sabres. Scotty Bowman lives a few blocks away, right along the golf course of Transit Valley. Harry Neale lives in the same neighborhood too. Dudley had the worst style in the 90s but was always cordial if you encountered him. Bowman will talk you ears off if you stand next to him while a game is going on…played with his GM son, Stan for Mites and Squirts (same team as Todd Marchant), Scotty would come to games and give a running commentary plus his insights of the game to whichever parents were next to him. That story Whit had about Scotty telling his Dad that he (Whit) was a strong player, was common for the parents on our team to experience as well. Stan was slow as a snail, and ending up getting cut our Squirt Major season. Coach was Pete Schneider, father of AHL sniper Cole Schneider. That first year of Mites with Stan on our team, we lost to London with Eric Lindros – lost 6-3, Lindros, who was playing D, scored all 6 goals. That was our intro to him. Our team saw a lot of him over the years, also saw many parents on opposing teams question whether his parents had forged his birth certificate. Remember a tourney in Barrie where for some reason his Mom Bonnie was on the cover of the local paper and all the parents of our team were gossiping about what horrible parents Lindros' were. Ah…youth hockey, miss those days.
