Willy is beside himself. Driving around downtown Toronto begging (thru texts) Treliving’s family for address to Boston Pizza.

if this doesn’t infuriate paul marner…

  3. lLikeCats

I only believe in Core 1. Matthew Knies. Everything else is secondary.

  4. Subscribe. The Crest over players always.

    I actually loved that response!

So when did core 4 become part of the nomenclature? Wonder if Shanny uses it internally or that’s how all other GMs refer to those players??

  7. JamesCurtis24

And he’s right. Matthews and Marner got extremely favorable deals that did not benefit the team in any way. It’s time for that shit to stop. This seems to be the only team in the league where the elite players on it haven’t left something on the table to help the team.

On top of that, we know all these guys are going to get their entire contract in signing bonus, and their earnings potential outside of hockey is exceedingly higher in Toronto, than anywhere else in the league.

In my worthless opinion, I don’t think Matthews should be over MacKinnon’s cap hit for 8 years. And if Matthews wants a 3 or 4 year deal, the discussion should be LOWERING his current cap hit.

NGL, he’s winning me over already.

At this point, just gotta be on board and hope Shanny made the right decision.

    GLG!

    Keep going, I’m almost there

This was the best answer he gave in the conference and it definitely shows that his message isn’t about one or more specific players. It’s about buying into the full team from the fwds to the 7th d men to the healthy scratches

This for me was one of Dubas’ weaknesses. Having two teams within a team.

  12. WhoJustShat

Can the doom please stop this is the gm we need, he chose to leave the Flames and wanted this job more than Dubas… WELCOME HOME BRAD!!!

  13. _COREY_TREVOR

About to watch the presser now, but I like this quote already.

    Leafs fan living in Calgary.

I’ve heard a lot from Brad over the years out here, and I do not have many negative things to say. He great with the press, level headed and quite a bright guy.

    Good pick up for TO

This should just about do it for this group

Thank you! I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. This « core four » thing permeates into every Leafs discussion and IMO is antithetical to the concept of winning as a team. We’ve treated our depth players as disposable for a number of years now and it has always kinda bugged me.

    Naysayers of yesterday, in shambles

I’ll get downvoted for this but whatever.

Yes I think Dubas was still the best person for the job, but I’m not hating on Treliving and obviously want him to do well. This was a good answer but it’s not realistic. It IS about your star players, the rest are just the supporting cast that you rotate in and out throughout the years. You need your stars to play well to win.

Don’t tell me Matthews doesn’t mean more to the success of this team than say, Kampf/Kerfoot/Bunting, etc. And don’t tell me Florida would have the success they are now if Bob didn’t suddenly plays like he went back in time by 5 years. It is about your stars, obviously you need the right supporting cast around them; but right now, given the contract status of the core guys and how it’ll affect the team going forward, this is 100% about them.

Doesn’t help when 4 players out of a 20ish player roster don’t show up in the playoffs, but I like what he’s saying. Now let’s see what happens.

  20. lukaskywalker

Hate this because the team runs through them. And they simply have shown that they don’t have it come playoff time.

Hey if he can build a team around them all the power to him. Just feeling a bit sceptical after the last several seasons.

  21. tm_leafer

Putting a heavy emphasis on this would be a breath of fresh air.

  22. Delicious-Version854

very impressive presser, let’s get after it!

  23. mcmike8

That being said, all rumours have suggested they are keeping the core 4 (or 5)…. So I guess, salary wise, it is mostly about the core 4/5.

  24. TheMannX

Call me skeptical on this, not because Treliving doesn’t believe in it, but because I don’t think the Core four do, and that’s gonna be a problem until he moves at least one of them.

Second round is as far as this core can go. Full stop. The sooner Brad realizes this and gets to moving a couple of them, the easier his job is gonna be.

  25. thrillhouse98

What’s the difference? Seriously that IS the team at this point. I don’t get it.
