I hope he can go out on his own terms and not have his retirement dictated by injury. Looks to be 50/50 at this point.
I think he could still get out there. Being able to have a full off-season to train and get in shap is something he missed last year, so he might be better when the season starts than when he was inserted into the line up this past winter. Not sure I’m ready to part with the Swede, so let’s hope we get another year or maybe even two from him
He is my favorite player and his jersey is the only one I own. I would hate to see him go out on an injury and I hope he can get a full off-season to get into shape.
I can’t stress enough how much I fucking love Backsy; even without the cup he deserves to have his number retired. Caps Mt Rushmore.
But his cap hit is brutal and he just isn’t the same guy he used to be and I don’t think we can realistically count on him to give us 50 games.

Ugh. Backstrom’s earned the right to play this however he wants, but man does this fuck up the chances of revamping the roster this offseason. If he decides to retire at that point it’ll be too late to get a decent replacement, and if he decides to play and it’s the same level we saw last year, the Caps’ve got a 9.2 million dollar 3C. In the flat cap era heading into a season with a giant question mark taking up more than 10% of you cap is absolutely crippling, and it sounds like we’re heading into a second straight year of that.
LTIR him unfortunately unless he can use the break to get back into form.
Trade for Josh Norris if he retires.
