I’ve been looking forward to this one.
As much as I liked the whole Anaheim underdog story leading up to the finals, the clutch-and-grab and oversized gear that dominated the dead puck era at this point made even Devils trap hockey look entertaining by comparison. I felt sad for Adam Oates but other than that I was happy New Jersey won because at that point they'd become the great east hope against the big, dominant west and they were a smaller market team than the usual suspects of contenders pre cap era.

The battle of the trap. Jean-Sebastien Giguere was a wall that year. Stung the Calgary Flames traded him for a second round draft pick in 2000 (Matt Pettinger) to see this.
With all the attention Jean-Sebastien Giguere got, Martin Brodeur only had 3 shutouts in the Stanley Cup Finals with games 1, 2 and 7. Anaheim wouldn't of gotten that far without Giguere.
You have to take score differentials into account when measuring shot counts. Teams always tend to get outshot after they establish a lead. It’s more important what the shot differentials are when the score is tied or within one goal.

Giguere played great in this playoffs and I wanted them to win the Cup so bad that year. If they had Teemu Selanne that year I think they beat NJ.

I'll never forget Scott Stevens hit on Paul Kariya and Kariya lying on the ice. Then you see him breathe on the visor, my Lord that was a sight. I was so worried for Kariya.

I felt bad for Detroit. They far outplayed the Ducks, but Giguere was super human during this run.
Pretty how you felt when the Wings were defeated by the Mighty Ducks back in the first round of the 2003 Stanley Cup finals is how I felt when the Capitals thwarted the Pens in this year's Stanley Cup playoffs. I DESPISE and can't stand Pittsburgh in every sense of the word and their defeat to Washington was the most satisfying defeat I've ever seen in the NHL and I'll remember that game 6 between the Caps and Pens for years to come. I was the happiest person alive when Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the OT winner and FINALLY sending those obnoxious Pens packing

GIGUERE WAS A BEAST. Going into the playoffs my friends and I were amazed how he shut Detroit down and got their Bowman replacement Dave Lewis fired shortly after.
