Not implying Doan is tied to Matthews at all, but it’s interesting that Matthews specifically called Doan out as his favorite player, and a good person, and now he’s assistant GM. That’s definitely not going to hurt the negotiation.
So we’re going to sign Kane to a cheap deal to play with Matthews, and with the Doan hire, he’ll sign for 12.7×8?

I don’t see this as simply a “keep him” tactic, but a “sorry Kyle is gone, here’s a buddy” consolation prize to keep him happy next season. Perhaps he even requested/demanded it.

Doan and Kaberle were my favourite players. The first time I ever left Canada was to watch Shane Doan and the Coyotes play.
