  1. Once the horn sounded the Isles faced reality that their hey day was over that had to of hurt,I know that that would've got to me.

  2. I remember throughout the 1983-84 season, pretty much everyone expected an Islanders-Oilers rematch in the spring.

  3. Great game !…remember it well, 99 should have gotten the mvp, in my opinion, for coming through big time in this game.

  4. The Islanders first playoff series loss (of the 1980s) since the 1979 Stanley Cup Semifinals to the New York Rangers.

  5. One Team's Title began in 1980 on Home Ice. Another Team's Reign also began on Home Ice in 1984 against that same Team whose Reign ended in that Game. Key to the Oilers Dethroning the Islanders Reign? Winning Game 1 at "Fort Neverlose" Nassau Coliseum Home of the Islanders where they never lost a Stanley Cup Finals Game from 1980 to 1983. Not against the Flyers in 1980. Not against the North Stars in 1981. Not against the Canucks in 1982. And not against the Oilers in 1983. Plus the Bruins in 1980 was one of the couple Other Teams besides the Oilers in 1984 to win a Stanley Cup Playoff Game against the Islanders 1980 to 1984 at Nassau Coliseum. Had the Oilers lost one of their Home Games both Game 6 and Game 7 that year would have had to be played at Nassau Coliseum.

  6. I never understood why they announced the winner of the Conn Smythe award before the end of the game. In this case, Messier is announced as the winner with over 3 minutes remaining in a two goal game. I guess it never backfired but it always seemed strange to me that they did it this way.

  7. Would these playoffs have been different if the NHL hadn't of given the Oilers 3 straight home games ?

  8. This was Wayne Gretsky's second trip to the Stanley Cup finals and his first victory! The Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders had so much great talent on the ice! Unfortunately, the NY Islanders were so banged up. Game 1 and 2 of this Stanley Cup Finals showed how good both teams were! In Game 1, the two teams battled each her so evenly. In the second game, the Islanders showed how good they were even though they had so many injuries! What turned this series to Edmonton's favor was when Wayne Gretsky finally scored! From that moment onward, the momentum was with Edmonton and they never looked back after that!

  9. The islanders only needed a few more Pat’s to beat the oilers. It’s unfortunate but the goal scorers for the islanders were tired, and worn out. Billy should have stayed in net also.

  10. Really goes to show how short hockey games are when you take out the TV Timeouts and Intermissions.

  11. The year before, when the Oilers lost to the Islanders, they gave birth to a story that I have told my son many times. Maybe mostly fact. After the Islanders beat the Oilers the previous year, I had read a story that Messier and Gretzky were all changed into their street clothes, still pumped and ready to go play another game, full of disappointment but still lots of youthful energy, and heading down a hallway. They wanted to sneak past the Islanders' dressing room, and what they saw stayed with them forever. What they saw was an Islander team physically drained, having been really pushed by the Oilers. They were celebrating, but being an ageing team, they were also clearly spent. Messier and Gretzky learned two things that day: 1- In order to win the Cup you have to give absolutely everything physically that you've got and then some. And 2- They saw that the Islanders, although they had beaten them and the other Oilers, were at the end of their dynasty and the younger, faster Oilers were ready to take the throne. Like I say, maybe mostly fact, but a great story.

  12. Obvs players in 2023 now bigger and stronger and better athletes, but look at the crowd here: No explosions or instructions on how to cheer. No piped in music. No advertisements on the boards or ice, few expensive replica jerseys. Refs let everything go, players tough as nails. Semenko a regular shift on Gretzky's wing. Champagne in old buckets. Fans on the ice, pandemonium. That was fun to watch.
