Peuvent-ils re-signer Tyler Bertuzzi ? Ça va être un été intéressant, les amis ! Here's what the Bruins have accomplished under Don Sweeney as GM since he took over in 2015
7 of 8 years failing to win more than one playoff round (87% of the time)
4 of 8 years either a playoff DNQ or a 1st round loss (50% of the time)
Thus with the core he inherited and added little to all they've done is either fail early in the playoffs primarily or flat out choke
They've won nothing with Bergeron and Krejci since 2015. Both Bergeron and Krejci have been getting their lunches handed to them since 2018 in the playoffs. Bergeron has been destroyed or ineffective in the post season for 3 straight years
You also don't win Stanley Cups with 38 year old 1Cs and 2Cs. Thus why bring either Bergeron or Krejci back at this point? For one more playoff choke?
The last two regular seasons saw 100+ point efforts and both ended in back to back 1st round, Game 7 chokes. Do Bruins fans really want to see more of this?
Where are the Bruins at organizationally this off-season?
– NHL's worst salary cap situation:
Only 7 forwards signed for next year
No 1c or 2c
Only $5M in Cap Space which won't be enough to even just re-sign Swayman and Frederic (let alone anyone else)
Inability to take back or retain salary in any potential trades
NHL's Worst draft capital situation
No 1st again until 2025
No 2nd again until 2016
Only 3 picks, in the top 3 rounds of the next 3 NHL drafts, COMBINED!!!
Inability to add draft picks to sweeten any deals due to this not having any Draft Capital thing
One of the NHL's worst farm systems:
Universally ranked 28th to dead last and 32nd in the NHL. Beyond Lysell and Lohrei (neither of which will be ready to contribute next year) along with the inability to add prospects to any deal because their prospect pool is rotten
What players can Boston trade for Cap Space, draft capital and or young, talented prospects?
Zboril Greer Reilly and Forbort: None have real value. None are going to return much of anything
Marchand Lindholm Pasta: All three have full NTCS. Not happening
Swayman: Not happening. Also an RFA
Carlo: No top 4RHD in their putrid farm system. No Cap to sign a top 4 RHD. Not happening
McAvoy: Not happening
Frederic: Not worth anything. Also an RFA. All they may do with Frederic is walk away from his arbitration award
That leaves the Bruins with only three players left that they could move to perhaps create Cap Space or to get some young prospects and or draft capital in return
Debrusk, Ullmark & Hall
Debrusk has been very up and down his entire career and he only has one year left on his deal. Unless the Bruins are 100% committed to re-signing him next offseason, they should 100% move him this off-season
Ullmark: The Bruins only have depth at one position organizationally, goalie. Ullmark has stunk both playoff runs in Boston and he's still injury prone
With his only making $5M, only having 2 years left on his deal, the Bruins having depth in goal (Swayman, Bussi Dyck, Svedback) and his just having a Vezina winning regular season…. Now is the time to move Ullmark
Goalies don't typically return high draft picks and prospects but the NHL is goal tender starved right now and most of the NHL is also in Cap Jail. So Ullmark would be able to be moved for some value this off-season
Hall: He may have been Boston's best playoff forward but he makes $6M, has two more years left on this deal &, doesn't play special teams. With most of the NHL being Cap strapped, the Bruins are probably going to have to either retain or take back salary or add a draft pick or prospect to get complete value for Hall this off season
Then there's still the whole still buying out Mitch Miller thing too to address
Not exactly a lot to get excited about if you're a Boston Bruins fan right now, not by a long shot
Don't fret fellow Bruins fans….While we won't be the juggernaut we were this regular season…we still have a strong core capable of making the playoffs…then getting hot playoff worthy goaltending and taking our shot…I'd trade Grzelcyk/Ullmark/DeBrusk/Hall to free up around $18 Million….bring it lots of low cap replacements with grit…or skilled young draft picks to get their opportunities….assess as the playoffs near and if we stink…move out further pieces (assuming right value)….Coyle/Forbort/Mike Reilly/Zboril…
Assuming Bergeron/Krejci don't come back, going into the season…after we move the $18 Million players i mentioned…I'd see our lines like this:
1: Pastrnak Zacha Marchand
2. FA/Rookie Coyle FA/Rookie
3.Greer FA/Rookie Frederic
4. FA/Rookie Nosek FA/Rookie
D1: McAvoy – Forbort
D2: Carlo – Lindholm
D3: Rookie/FA or Reilly – Zboril
G1 Swayman
G2 Rookie/FA
Preferably with the $18 Million added to our current Cap space…we should have $23 Million to fill in all the FA/Rookie spots you see…I'd actually hope we bring in a true #1 center….so that would use up $6-$9 Million…thus bumping Coyle down to 3rd line C….where he can shine…$23 Million used as follows: $9 Million #1 Center….$7-8 Million Bertuzzi for 2nd line….leaving about $6-7 Million for backup Goalie/3 forward spots and 1 D spot….quite doable….LET'S GO BRUINS!!!!
