For non-subscribers, Basu and Godin say from what they heard at the combine it’s pretty unlikely the Habs take Michkov. Some people think he’ll go outside the top 10 which is insane.

But for the Habs they think they’ll pick Leonard or Reinbacher which is the same opinion of that “league source” article posted earlier saying SJ will pick Smith.

  3. Basu’s recent articles sure have been controversial haven’t they? Even though they’re nothing egregious.

  4. Packaryammy

we should trade the pick if we aren’t taking Michkov, there’s no reason to waste #5 on anyone else in this draft, and there’s no real difference in the quality of the next bunch of players and someone will pay to move up if they have a specific player in mind

so we can drop down to like 8-10 and get the same quality of player (maybe even the one we wanted anyways)

just our luck, we get a #1 pick in the worst draft in the cap era, and the year after we just miss out on a great group of players…..

also fucking LOL at Basu talking about « compete » we need fucking skill, not compete, we can’t go back to back top 5 picks without acquiring skill, it just cannot happen, they have to draft someone with skill

The only guy I wouldn’t be totally pissed that we took instead of him would be Benson. Anyone else would be stupid to me I’d rather trade down.

This is obviously assuming smith and carlsson are gone

  6. easy89

If neither Carlsson nor Smith are available at 5, and management doesn’t want to draft Michkov, then what’s so crazy about trading pick #5 for a « sure » thing like Dubois?

  7. chickentastic94

I would really hate being into that FO right now. The whole Michkov feels like a big « damn if you do damn if you don’t ». I wonder if the Habs could explore the possibilility of traiding down or putting together a very compeling package to move up in the top 15 of the draft.

  8. jimhabfan

If we’re not taking one of the top 5 players in the draft, why are we not trading down on the draft? It’s ridiculous to think we wouldn’t take a generational talent if he falls to us at 5OA.

  9. Dirtcartdarbydoo

I can’t shake the feeling we’re picking Reinbacher or Dvorsky. I hope we don’t but I have a feeling.

  10. Diligent_Method199

    Call me crazy but leonard>smith

  11. sean_psc

If it does come down to those two, I’d be very surprised if they don’t take Leonard, based on my interpretation of the front office’s selection strategy thus far.

  12. CorporateGamer

I will go on a limb and say they pick a player.

  13. SceneAccomplished549

I wouldn’t have an issue if we picked Leonard at 5. I know that might piss some off, but I don’t think it would be a terrible pick.

    He could be our Tkachuk.

  14. yojnaf

This article makes me okay with the idea of taking Leonard

  15. WintertimeLivingEasy

It’s just crazy to me that Benson is never mentioned, Leonard is praised for his compete level, Benson’s competitiveness would be his best quality if didn’t have such amazing hockey sense and skills.

What’s the chances kent, geoff, and brobov work out a deal to buy michkov’s way out of his contract to come over early. Then matvei takes a team friendly deal when his entry level deal is over.

    A guy can dream

Smith and leonard are my only wants other than michkov

  17. aquila49

5 is tough. Seems like there’s a steep drop after the first five. If the Habs are certain they don’t want to pick Michkov, they have to hope the Sharks take the Russian, because there might not be many teams looking to trade up when there’s no real advantage.

  18. potato_soup303

I’d be happy with either Leonard or Reinbacher. In Kent/Gorton we trust and it will remain like this until proven wrong.

  19. silk_1233

    I dont get drafting Rienbacher.

Didnt we have 5 rookie d-men play significant minutes for us last year? And dont we have Hutson and Mallioux coming soon?

So we need an 8th young D-man? Kinda seems like we are full at that position

Always room for forwards. Armia and hoffman gone this year, opens up a spot for Leonard next year. No?

    « Whatever happens I trust Kent/Jeff »

Not saying Gorton and Hughes are the wrong people in place but we had this way of thinking for years and it allowed Bergevin to stay for so long. Again, not saying he was completely terrible, but his lack of development, despite his many great trades, ultimately made him a mediocre GM.

We can easily get players of Leonard and Reinbacher’s quality in the picks 10-15 since there is such a major drop off from Bedard, Fantilli, Carlson, Smith, Michkov, especially if reports are true that the ladder will not be selected by the Habs cuz he is deemed too unlikely to cross over to North America.

Remember, how much you like or favor a certain guy, the draft is a crapshoot. Better to let other teams make off the board picks and allow better player to fall into your laps. Hell, that’s how we got Caufield!

I’ve been saying all offseason they’re going to pass Michkov and take Reinbacher and this sub comes at me with pitchforks and machetes ![img](emote|t5_2r10m|5676)
