I think most habs fans sees the draft like this : There a 5 prospects that are pretty much slam dunk stars in the making : Bedard, Fantilli, Carlson, Smith and Michkov. We just want them to pick whoever is left in that group with the 5th overall, and Michkov is the most likely to be that guy. The next 5 players have good upside, but they are pretty far away in term of either potential or likelyhood to ever reach it. And to add cherry on the cake, there are reports that the Habs are interested in Reinbacher and Dvorsky.
I mean, we suffer through a rebuild because we are told that's the only way to get elite talent, and we get out of the rebuild zone with Slaf and Reinbacher ??? That's the kind of talent we usually get by barely missing the playoffs….
Habs are going with Smith or Leonard . The two best fits for the habs right now. No michkov even if he is available.
It must be such a tough place to be for Kent Hughes to be concerning Michkov. The line between the slam dunk pick of the decade and an absolute waste of a top 5 is so slim that he has to be playing the odds. The chances that Michkov is available at 5th are huge, so Hughes has to be the guy taking the right decision. In this position, he has to be considering all the factors around Michkov. It seems pretty obvious that if he does not choose him, Leonard is the alternative. Not a defenseman, not a defensive forward. I wouldn't wish to be him right now…

I would rather them take a swing with michkov even if it doesn’t end up panning out, than have them take the safe pick of someone like dvorsky. Would be pretty hard to argue that Hughes made a mistake when michkov is the most talented player available at the present moment.

Picks 1 to 3 are set, but after that it's a mix. I think Barlow is the dark horse between picks 4-10.
If Habs pick Michkov and it ends up not working out, no one will blame them. If they pick someone else like Dvorsky and it doesn't work out, fans will be so angry. Habs fans have had enough the management messing up with top picks, AKA KK.
