If I was the new GM, I would have already presented my detailed plans for the team to Brendan, so that I could move ahead with rebuilding and restocking the team and getting ready for 2024. You put forward your plan, it's either approved or not and then you move forward. The process is the problem in Toronto. Make the hard decisions. Communicate your beliefs to upper management and move forward. You can't make any worse decisions than what the Leaf's have already made over the past 7 seasons.
You are the new GM and it took Toronto 7 seasons to get where they are and yet, only Babcock was ever FIRED. Shanny was safe, Dubas wasn't going to get fired and now Keefe is going to be retained, so what are you going to lose by making some decisions. A GM is supposed to MANAGE, it's inherent to the job definition.
Sign mathews to what he wants asap and make him captain. Trade nylander and sign schenn. Bring in 2 hard ass players. One D mand and one forward.
Nylander feels like he could go be another Phil Kessel. Marner needs to go for defense, cap room and picks.

Matthews is the one that needs to be traded if you can't get get him re-signed before July 1. This is a Johnny Gaudreau situation. Paying him 11.8M and not buy 3 more UFA years was one of the worst contract signings in recent history and may have screwed the Leafs. But trade him now and give a US based team at least 1 year of him and you still get a decent return. A sign and trade you set up the team for now and into the future and free up cap space. Don't forget much of his goal scoring comes from good Marner passes and plays, he isn't worst the more than 12M you will have to pay even if he can get signed.

Man! Kyle did an absolutely $hit job on these contracts!! All overpaid, all have NMC, and won nothing. The Marner contact is just ridiculous; now Reilly is making 8.5, and Willy will want 9; it makes me sad, I find it harder and harder to cheer for this team.

The only one that matters is Matthews. Second to me would be marner because he is one of the top utilities players in the league BUT if he wants Matthews money (which I think he will) then drop him like a hot potato. Nylander at 9m is all he is worth as a 87 point winger who can not play any defence.
