One word is a game changer ~ Kadri
Knights fan here. Of every team we played in the playoffs, Edmonton was the most intimidating and Im glad we got it done this year because just like this video explains…they are so close to building a juggernaut of a team that I think this was truly the last time we would play Edmonton before they take that next step. Definitely expect big things from this team next year, they are hungry and tired of coming up short when they KNOW they can win. Led by the greatest player on the planet and arguably the 2nd greatest…there is no way this team doesn’t win a Cup soon. They’re just to darn good.
I mean I think it’s insane they have avs as the 2024 favorites with oilers and leafs behind them. I’m an avs fan and while I still think even without landy we are cup contenders, I’m having a hard time seeing how we are the number 1 favorite. Top 10 for sure, but this years free agency is pretty shitty unless we land nylander which I doubt unless we are gunna butcher our blue line and draft picks for him. I could see us being the favorite if we got O’Reilly back and sign a ton of guys to one year contracts and get discounts on girard, Johnson (who already said he wanted a cut to stay which is awesome and totally makes me feel even more loyal to him as an av) and young guys like Rodrigues. Otherwise idk. I feel like we are where Tampa was last year too. Just really beat the fuck up from so many consecutive cup runs. I could definitely see us being favorites in 2025 if we manage to have another rather good season in spite of whatever injuries players will have like we did this year, but idk. 2024 seems like it’s definitely gunna be between the oilers and another team like Florida or Vegas that’s able to capitalize on not being as beat up when the post season starts. Probably young and fast like NJ or a talent loaded team like New York if they can get their shit together.
I really don't think Edmonton is missing much. They somehow beat themselves. I mean when they are rolling they score on the PP like 100% of the time. If they can't keep the puck out of the net they just score more than the other team. Always a threat. I'm very surprised they have not been to the Finals at least once in the last few years. They look unstoppable then somehow just implode at the wrong time.
Eastern media and fans: "But, but, but, the east has the best teams! Look how good Boston, Toronto, Carolina and Tampa are! The west is weak. There are no good teams in the west. The east would steamroll the west. The only reason Las Vegas was any good this year is because they could beat up on the weaker western teams." LOL!
Jack Campbell and stu skinner stink.
Meh, the runner up take is kinda weak for me. Definitely not the most complete team out there this post-season, and sure they put up a better fight against VGK but I also really don't think they could've walked the same path that the Panthers did to get to the final either. Gotta sort out that depth for next season, and hope Skinner can rebound cause they really put him through it
WHATS A SAFER BET???
Big name big money player? ( that comes with expectations) OR looking for a diamond in the rough player with a dog in him??
Defensive zone system coaching, not so much the actual players. They were following the plan.
They aren’t “right there” lol they just aren’t
imo a goaltender is only as good as the defense in front of him. We need to improve our right side defense asap.
If Skinner takes another step (people forget he was a rookie) and Campbell bounces back, the Oilers are absolutely a threat. They have to upgrade over Ceci, absolutely.
Skinner is young he has a lot of potential but he shouldn't of been playing game 6 his confidence wasn't there and Campbell was playing good in playoffs. I know Campbell had a terrible season but he did have little stints where he played great. He was on a hot streak in playoffs and Skinner being a rookie wasn't playing great. Totally bad call by the coach. I think oilers should be in hunt next year. But injuries and other teams getting better happen. They have a great team with just a few weaknesses
I like your content but your borderline click-bait titles drive me nuts.
Two guys will never win the cup. Tkachuk and Bob couldn’t do it. Leon and Mccheese cant and won’t do it. They need a team.
He ain't even lying
2 years in a row we lost against the Champ!
I remember Adin Hill was kinda memed online. Nice to see him win it all.
From a Knights fan perspective, Edmonton scares me offensively but their defense and goaltending is suspect just as you say in the video. 5 on 5 Vegas was the better team, being able to roll 4 lines will do that. It just felt that if the Knights stayed out of the penalty box they had a chance to win. On the other hand, I have never feared an opponents power play, like I did with Edmonton. Bruce Cassidy made it a point of emphasis to stay out of the box, the players didn't exactly listen and the team paid for it dearly. I don't think Edmonton is as close as you think. They lacked depth scoring and could only really do damage on the power play. Edmonton's style of play seems too gimmicky in the playoffs, way too reliant on the power play, and way too reliant on McDavid and Draisaitl, can't defend and suspect goaltending. Also Bruce Cassidy outcoached Jay Woodcroft.
That nurse contract SUCKS
2:20 No need to be mean
Nurse looks like he doesn't know he's a defenseman half the time out there
Vegas still hasn't had to deal with the reality and the trouble of building up a great team/franchise from the ground up like every other NHL organization has had to do, so i still don't give them any respect. They're still living in a fairy tale after having success handed to them on a silver platter since their first season. The group that won the Stanley Cup this year really wasn't a "team" that won the cup because several incredibly key players were picked up at the trade deadline and rode the others' coattails. I'll respect the golden knights after the organization actually works for something.
goal tending and defense, but the real reason was nobody wanted to play the full game they would look dead lazy 2nd period
Avs would have won the '21 Cup if Kadri hasn't gotten himself (deservedly) suspended for the (admittedly) dirty, selfish and stupid hit against StL the previous round. Colorado before the Kadri suspension was a juggernaut on par with that year's version of Tampa, whom they whooped the next year. Their big 4 of MacKinnon, Makar, Moose and Landy were on point and 2021 Grubauer was def better than 2022 Kuemper, but losing Kadri completely killed the productivity of their middle six, and that's what Vegas exploited to eliminate them.
they need to change up the west vs east. The east is so banged up by the time they get to the finals.
Look at the Panthers for example there were 6 guys playing with serious injuries like dislocations, broken sternums, broken ankles, etc. Vegas had 0 injuries.
The panthers played the 1st place, 2nd place, and 4th place team in the league.
Vegas played 6th, 8th, 14th place teams in the league.
East consistently cliches the most top 5 spots / top 10 spots every season.
Nurse isn't a true #1, and he's overpaid, these are facts that have been long since established.
His biggest problem this year was his partner. Ceci was great in the 2021-22 season, but this past season he reverted back to his days in Ottawa.
Nurse was put out so many times this year by Ceci's poor decision making a positioning on the ice.
Nurse with a competent partner can be a rock. Not superstar level, but a rock like Ekholm.
Get rid of Ceci for a more competent, defensively minded RHD and Nurse's game instantly improves. Just like how Bouchard's game improved playing alongside Keith and Ekholm.
😂 over rated, cats would have crushed them 🙀
Actually Campbell played really well when he was called upon. You make it sound like Campbell was the problem. Not true at all.
I disagree with your analysis that player personnel on the blue line is the big problem. I'm not saying the roster is perfect, but search for an article called "Marchessault spilled the beans on exactly how Vegas knew it could beat Edmonton". It should come up with David Staples as the author under the Edmonton Journal or the National Post. It's a very good read about how the Oilers mistakenly played a man-to-man defensive system instead of a zone defense and Vegas exploited it to get them running around 5 on 5.
The Oilers don't have the cap space to start upgrading the player positions that are normally discussed in that manner. Also, to dump bad contracts, you usually have to retain salary and take a huge hit on offering other assets to get rid of someone. If you make these moves and deploy the same system, your new players are going to fail just like the team did in the 2nd round against Vegas.
A more prudent approach would be to reassess the defensive system and give this team a full year with Ekholm built into the roster. Keep in mind the Oilers were something like the 2nd best team in the NHL from the trade deadline to the end of the regular season. Ekholm will take the pressure off of Nurse/Ceci. The players who are taking so much flak right now would be put into a better place to succeed with a new system, and might surprise a lot of people with a bounce-back year. (Example: people had a lot of good things to say about Cody Ceci the year the Oilers got to the conference finals). You can't force other teams to give up the players you want just because you want them, and you probably have more control over your own game plan than you do over a whole bunch of hypothetical roster moves.
PS – I'm not so arrogant as to think I have all of the answers. I'm just a random fan like everyone else. I welcome any arguments/counterpoints. Cheers!
congratulations to the knights. well deserved and earned title.
BUT the league is totally rigged against legacy cities. especially Canadian ones. their revenue is maxed out so why spend $? the seats will fill up no matter what!!!
the only way to fix this is with a fan strike. boycott the games. dont watch them either.
EDM just needs a couple pieces and they’re gonna be scary. They have the craziest power play I’ve ever seen and it was a heart attack every time they’re out. If they get good defensive depth it’s a serious problem.
Vegas fan here. The Oilers have two world-class scorers in McDavid and Draisaitl. If they ever get their defense together, they will be unbeatable. No argument.
One of those low key, solid type defensemen I’ve thought would be a good fit for the Oilers is Scott Mayfield of the Islanders. He’s a UFA this summer. This past trading deadline I thought they might make a move for him but they made the deal with Nashville instead, which was a good move. Now add Mayfield to the mix and that helps a little more.
If Hill was in the whole series, it would have been over in 5
Problem for Edmonton is the Knights aren't going anywhere next year. After that though, i think the Oilers window opens.
Where the hell was Cece this season? I barely even noticed him or heard his name and when I did he looked like he didn’t want to be there.
I felt Oils got out coached by the knights.
Oilers need to be completely trained on how to play the defensive aim of the game. Goalies are only as good as the players in front of him, controlling the grade A or 5 alarm chances
1:22 Not entirely accurate. Woodcroft kept starting Skinner in every game. And when he struggled, he'd put in Campbell when the game was pretty much out of reach. Campbell should have gotten the opportunity to start because Skinner way too up and down.
Agreed. The defense could use a tune-up. Of all the Canadian teams, the Oilers have the best chance to win the cup. Their power play was amazing, but I think scoring more even-strength goals would help.
Vegas fan. Edmonton scared the living daylights out of me. They were on an absolute tear at the end of the season, and it always felt Vegas was going just one bad penalty away from giving up a goal. In retrospect, the Oilers felt like the biggest challenge of the entire cup run.
I feel like if the oilers can boost their depth a little more, then I will be very optimistic for next season
So all Edmonton is missing is defense and goaltending- piece of cake!
