Not totally unexpected but Dreger with the Friday news bomb that WHL hockey is leaving Winnipeg* (again).

Kick in the nuts after kick in the nuts…

I’m honestly wondering if the ownership group ever had a sustainable, long-term plan to keep the Ice in Winnipeg once the original arena plan fell through.
I’m sure they were working on it behind the scenes, but from everything I saw, it didn’t exactly seem like they were working very hard to get a new arena figured out.

Hopefully some good news soon

I’m so dejected.
At least I got to see some games with my family, got their inaugural roster to sign a jersey (well, as many as I could until Covid hit; maybe 3/4 of the team).
My girls got to be Junior Ice Skaters too, so they’ve made some memories.
Daggum it.

For anyone close to the organization it really comes as no surprise, especially when they pulled that “we didn’t get fined” bs

I’m sorry but as someone from Cranbrook this kind of pisses me off a bit. Losing the Ice sucked, and yes there were attendance issues but since the new owners bought them in 2017 they were just kind of trash.
Having the Ice now move to Wenatchee is another kick in the pants. So Wenatchee had a BCHL team called the Wild, and this year they had an average attendance of 300 more than the Cranbrook Bucks. The year before their average attendance was 300 less than the Bucks. If you took the Ice out of Cranbrook due to attendance issues, why would you move them to a city who basically has the exact same attendance in their minor hockey as Cranbrook.

Very sad to lose the team, Ice ownership was pathetic. What a shame.

Winnipeg is just too small of a city to support an NHL, AHL and WHL team. Like that’s a lot of hockey teams
