This is one guy that I have absolutely no doubt will re-sign

This is a tough one imo. I love Dawson and believe his work ethic will elevate his growth. But as his role increased with the team and the season dragged on, we did begin to see the limits of what he can get done just yet. It feels risky to place a high price tag on someone who doesn’t have the toptier puck handling of some of our stars, but also this guy seems like such a rabid gamer that this could be our chance to get incredible value out of him by signing something longer term. I feel like I truly have no clue where this contract ends up.

Fitz is gonna make me bust with all these 8 year discount deals

This one will be interesting, I would like merc to try and elevate his game this year before putting a long term contract into place. Obviously if he signs for a low aav I won’t be complaining but how much do we value Mercer at?

Without this next season to base $ off of, I’d say like 6M

Will fitz work his magic and sign him for that or less for long term?

Im guessing Mercer gets a decent bridge deal. 3-4 years 4-5 million would be ideal for flexibility while we shed some larger contracts and get guys like Luke and nemec on bridge deals.

I think the problem with this is the timing.

    – why would Mercer sign long term now when if he waits a couple years the cap goes way up. It’s artificially constrained now.

    – speaking of the cap, it’s going to be rough next year. Bratt taking a discount really helps but the devils will be in a much much better place when the ~$2.5M of buyouts falls off the following season. That should also be a much bigger cap bump.

I think it is in the best interest of the devils to lock down now during the time of flat cap. But I just don’t see the appeal for players in most cases.

He’s giving out 8 year deals like Oprah gave out cars.

Offer him an 8×4.5 the second it’s 12:01am on 7/1 and go from there.
