The fact we are like the 5th or 6th best team in the Pacific makes me think we should have waited it out, but it is what it is.

Trading our picks for him was stupid and now we are just doubling down on dumb decisions. We should have waited to buy him out, let him play in minors if he is shit, we’re not going to do anything useful with the cap space.

The real challenge falls on Rick Tocchet to have a cohesive defence system going forward as well as Demko playing above average.

If mgmt was able to convince Aqua to pay out OEL, then they probably pitched a good enough « we can win now if… » scenario

$7mil in cap space is huge this year. Then only $2.4mil next year when the cap rises $8+mil is pretty dope. Then if the cap goes to $100m like he said, we’re only paying $3.4mil in years 3+4 in 2023 dollars. Instead of having 35y/o OEL at $7.2mil this is a huge win

It would have been nice if Benning hadn’t been around for almost 8 years to do the damage he did, I’ll never forgive him for that

We didn’t need to do it if we did the smart thing and started a rebuild. Our cap structure was fucked, and still is fucked. That’s 8 fuckin’ years of dead cap. 2 years are almost 5 mil, 2 years are almost 3mil. Those are good players that we can’t sign.
Yes, OEL’s cap was high, but think of it this way. We have to replace OEL now. Whether you liked him or not, he played 20 minutes a game here against the best the opponents had to offer cause we aren’t playing Hughes in a shutdown role. So we need a top 4 D-man. But we have that dead cap. So we need a top 4 d-man making 3-4mil. And that’ll equal what OEL’s cap hit would have been. How many good top 4 d-men are you getting in the 3-4mil range? We aren’t better off, we’ll be getting a similar player to OEL or we are losing cap to spend somewhere else in the lineup. It’s a great buyout this season and next season. But after that it’s ugly for 4 straight years.
« Cap is gonna go up. » Yes, and with it so do player salaries. It’s not free cap space. That cap goes to the star players as it always does. We should have just started rebuilding. As much as it pains me, you move Petey and Demko and rebuild proper. We have 5 years of Hughes and you just hope in 5 years time we have something to keep Hughes around, if he plans on walking you trade him for a haul too. You also don’t do the Hronek trade. That’s a 1st and a 2nd rounder this year we don’t lose. Demko to Pittsburgh for a 1st rounder and maybe Pickering. Petey for a haul.

OEL gone I can tell you that much for free

Would have been sensible if we were contenders.

We were fucked either way.
