Respectfully…the narrative that 13M or 14M is appropriate and palatable to the Leaf fan base is a farce. The results and “optics analytics” don’t match. Regardless…any contract that pushes the cap issue beyond its current problem level across the 4 only doubles down on this issue of this team not having D and depth to be successful in the post season.
It’s funny how you bring up Eichel yes he ended up winning the cup but if that never happened then Austons season was way better points wise.

If he took 12 1/2 million -or 13 million it would show he all in! He gets 15 million its all about the money and who cares about winning.
Matthews the season before last vs Matthews last season is Matthews with Marner vs Matthews without Marner. The problem comes in the playoffs when Marner needs players to make space for him and Matthews doesn't because he plays small.
Does Matthews look like a captain? No. Rielly does.
Is Matthews worth 13M? No. Last year he wasn't worth what he was getting now. If he wants more than he is getting now trade him.
Matthews only wants to sign for 2 or 3 years. Trade him, he doesn't really want to be in Toronto. Moving on from greedy players sends a great message to Marner as well.
Matthews may be the face of the franchise but the team is only as good as Marner plays. Marner great, team great. Marner bad, team loses.
Keefe coming back. There aren't a lot of great other options out there right now. I really like the idea of bringing in Muller. Muller isn't perfect but the thought of Keefe getting outcoached in the playoffs again induces nausea. Imagine if the Leafs had a real coach like Cassidy last season.

I disagree with Maclean Matthew's is as good if not better than Mackinnon he just won the hart trophy and he had forty goals this past season and McDavid has got Leon by his side,and Matthew's has won as many cups as McDavid has ,bring in towes to teach them how to prepare to win in the playoffs
I'd go 12.7M x 3 for #34 if I really have to. Don't really want to be tied down to him long term, would regret it later. Don't think Leafs can win with this kind of guy, and that goes for Marner as well. Those 2 have no more excuses to offer for poor play in the playoffs. They didn't even take any responsibility, not even close. "Eyes are the window of the soul". I look at #34 and #16, and don't see what's needed to lead to go all the way. As for #34 wearing, the C, no bleeping way. Rielly should've been the Captain 5 years ago. Leafs still can;t see that they're on a dead end street.

Leafs need to replace some players with bigger bodies that do the grind. If you look around Buffalo is on the hunt of upcoming teams, they are big, young and fast, Ottawa will only become more pesty, Florida as we know played the boards and even though it seems like the NHL is trying to diminish fighting,…Our players need those types of stand ups, go to the corner, dig, hit, take a hit, and throw them with authority because, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares (our leaders do not dig the corners or rough stuff and need to feel like i.e. Patrick kane opening up ice for teammates…I realize 1 of the top 4 may have to be traded in order to not only shock, but to improve in a key area especially come playoffs. Give me Wilson for the top line,..Zadorov for the 2nd line, Lucic for the 4th line and now some tougher players that can still compliment our core whatever it shall be.

The problem with Matthews is they put together a soft team and soft locker room. If he had came in the league and the leafs were a physical battling team he may have gone a bit in that direction. But having Tavares Marner and Nylander as your top 6 is a joke. Tavares will have to take a discount when his contract ends and probably become a winger but I don't see how we keep Marner and Nylander. Marner has way more skill and is one of the best utility players especially on the pk. Nylander has no defence and is of and on. Problem is how much money is hold back marner going to want.
