  1. How much of the Hartford talk is just nostalgia? If the team moves there what will they be called? Can they secure the rights to the name and logo? If not will a team there work without that connection. Will the die hard Whaler fans still support it? The talk has died down about K.C. they have a history of Hockey, there would be an in-state rivalry which could also boost the Blues market, Dallas and the Av's are not to far out of the way, thoughts? I do have to strongly disagree with Bettman wanting to expose new fans to Hockey, cause if he does he has a horrible way of doing it. Again I talk about ADDS! I live in N.W. Ark not exactly a Hockey mecca thou we do have some. It's all about the Razor backs and collage sports. Over my 25yrs here I have turned many people onto Hockey but now all I have heard over and over again is how can you stand watching it with all those ADDS! Not a way to get people interested in the game! Hell even Nascar and soccer fans I know are like what the hell, so distracting and ruining the game.

  2. It's as if people forget (or choose to) that the Nordiques left because they couldn't afford a stadium. The Whalers left because they couldn't afford a stadium. They love hockey? They're gasp traditional(!!!!) markets!? WHO CARES!? Seriously, who the hell cares? You're talking about moving a team with problems surrounding funding and an arena to a place………..with problems surrounding funding and an arena!

Yes, it's romantic. Yes, it makes people all tingly and warm inside. It's an absolute pipe dream.

    San Diego would be perfect.

  3. Bobblehead Bettman is a plant from the NBA with 1 clear mandate….ruin hockey in every sense.
    His mission is almost complete.
He has undermined Canadian teams in every playoff by instructing his refs to screw the Canada based teams. The ref level of corruption is unprecedented and never questioned.
Their "disciplinary committee" is a laughingstock.
His influence has also affected the international game by pulling NHL 'ers out of the Olympics.
He has destroyed the traditions in the game by renaming everything to what he wants. Soon, the Stanley Cup will be renamed the Bettman Trophy or some other crap so he can leave a legacy.
He must be fired, and hockey should be run by people who know the game, not some NBA reject.

  4. It would make sense to move the coyotes to Connecticut, Milwaukee, or Salt Lake City if the demand is there. A move to Quebec City however is a much harder path. The Hockey Guy did an excellent video covering the subject and with the current ownership not wanting to bleed more money….well let's just say that one is a dead proposition.

  5. I know this is just an opinion piece but how come the fact that a team would have to move to the west if either Hartford, Quebec or Atlanta buys them keeps getting ignored?
So no, not happening. Only way this happens is in an expansion. the coyotes won't move to a team in the east because that means a team like detroit or columbus would have to move back to the west and they word so hard to get moved to the east a few years ago no amount of money will convince them to go back.

  6. The league was working for years to get balanced conferences. That's what's kept Quebec out of the mix. They certainly aren't going to Connecticut.

  7. i would love the whalers back live in new jersey but from day 1 would become a whalers fan move Detroit back to the west and it would reestablish the crazy detroit colorado rivalry that hockey fans used to love

  8. The Whalers were never a great draw, other than Boston and New York, they seldom had sell out games. Hartford is a small city, makes no sense sense to put a team there.

  9. Houston probably gets everything done but yeah they need to fight harder because they could lose this chance. SD is fine but maybe it just has the Gulls and Seals since the arena is quite small.

  10. I think it’s weird that no one mentions Milwaukee/Wisconsin.

It’s basically Canada and they already have the other major sports. A lot of the players are from Wisconsin too, and it would be a nice local rivalry for Chicago and even Minnesota.

  11. I’d love Hartford but let me throw another hat in the ring: If they’re really considering moving the Yotes to a region of another team (The Northeast and the Bruins) in the Eastern Conference, what about trying the other side in the Bay Area (AKA: Oakland). Oakland is similar to Hartford expect you have 2 sites whether you can renovate Oracle or use the Howard Terminal site to build a smaller, less costly NHL arena. As is, Oakland is willing to put $400M+ to a stadium there.
Just a thought but unlikely with the Sharks, and Houston likely is the only option for relocation in the NHL’s head.

  12. Detroit should consider moving back to the central if they ever wanna make the playoffs

  13. This is going to mess with the divisions and conference videos. If Quebec can't get a team because of it messing with the conferences, Hartford shouldn't either. If Arizona is going to move it should stay in the west. Saskatoon maybe, give Saskatchewan a team. That would be a pretty good market. The other half of the year when the Roughriders aren't playing their fans need something to watch

  14. As a Habs fan I'm disappointed that it's because of Habs profit lost that they are putting sticks in Quebec wheel

  15. Not a chance they move them to the Eastern Conf, that means a team from the east would have to move to the west in order for the divisions to work out and no team is going to do that due to the travel schedule, for reference Columbus and Detroit fought pretty hard to be moved into the east. If either Quebec or Hartford get a team it will be part of a two team expansion where one city from the east and one from the west is selected. In other words expect Houston or K.C. to get a team before either of those two cities

  16. I live in Phoenix now but I lived in Houston for many years and as much as I would like to see the coyotes go to Houston, they are not a hockeytown, remember when they had a team called the Rockets with Gordie Howe? I think Hartford has a much better chance.

  17. SLC might be a bad idea. From what I gather, the night life is terrible, which causes them to lose NBA players. My guess is Houston gets the next team.

  18. As a lifelong hockey fan from Utah, I wouldn't take Ryan Smith seriously. Salt Lake has had a minor hockey team since the 70's but once the Jazz came to town, hockey has stagnated. The former owner of the Jazz sold off one of our teams so there are a lot of people here who look on this latest pitch by Jazz ownership with a fish eye. The only reason we got a team back is because we won the bid for the 2002 Olympics and the Nordiques moved to Denver which sent the Grizzlies to SLC.
While I would love to see a team here, there just isn't a big enough fan base to support it and the local media rarely will comment on our ECHL team so the publicity would need a major boost to try to even move the needle a little. Not holding my breath that it can happen.

  19. I still think you keep Arizona somewhere out west like Utah and then you give the East a shot at building a team from scratch instead of PTSD of a horribly run team that caused you to lose them in the first place. I'm ashamed to say I kind of agree with Bettman about him finding non-hockey markets to try to drum up more business because those who already love hockey won't walk away if their city doesn't have a team available but adding a new market like Seattle, Vegas or again my pick Utah you grow a new base of fans. I hope he doesn't move them to San Diego because my joke still stands that instead of having Coyotes smuggle people from south of the border we're going to have the Coyotes smuggle LTIR and retired players from teams north of the border.

  20. I think the best move would be to move them to Houston. That would keep them in the western conference and the central division. Moving them into the Eastern conference would mean someone else needs to move to the west. It's just not logical for them to go to Hartford or Quebec city.

  21. ugh as a ct native i don't even want to slightly get my hopes up. apparently no hometown hockey for me thx gary.

  22. As a Canadian I’d love to see Hamilton,Ontario would be cool & they already have an arena at “Copps Coliseum” which holds 18,000 & change & the former home to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs who were the farm team to the Montreal Canadiens but now have an OHL team under the same name. Maybe Nova Scotia could possibly have an NHL team & of course i think Québec deserves another shot at the NHL imo. Gary Bettman though i can’t stand the guy & wish he’d resign or get fired if that’s even possible?! Who does Bettman report to actually if someone could fill me in? Bettman has been the NHL commissioner since the mid 90’s i believe & i think he’s run his course imo & i think it’s time to pass the torch on to someone else such as the AHL commissioner or the OHL commissioner as examples. For myself it’s not just that because i’m Canadian & that he won’t give Québec another chance or Hamilton or some where else in Canada a shot it’s because of his attitude & the way he carries himself which is robot like & his i’m above you attitude & you know he’s loving that the Los Vegas Golden Knights winning the Stanley Cup with Florida in the finals as well 😑

  23. Before you ask whether we need another team in California, remember that California has about as many people as Canada. 🙃

  24. When will the league understand that this is a league between BOTH Canada AND the US!!?? Why tf does the sport get to grow and expand ONLY in the states and NOT the country that invented it!!!? Like just because Canadians are already fans doesn't mean we don't deserve more teams, do you seriously think people living in Saskatchewan, Vancouver Island/upper BC, Halifax, parts of Ontario far from Toronto and Ottawa, Quebec city, etc. can all come to watch their provinces team!?? Just because we have fans doesn't mean we want to f*kin watch all the games from home due to not having any nearby teams!! Just like how the US let's each and every corner have some sort of sports team, Canada DESERVES to at least have a team in EVERY big city and 2 in major ones (Toronto & Vancouver) because they have the population in surrounding cities!!!

  25. Midwest team makes sense… it’s surprising that Wisconsin doesn’t have a team.

  26. why not quebec? basically any canadian city is going to be home run that sells out every night

  27. Id like them to move to a hockey desert. Living in Southern Mississippi the closest nhl team is split between the stars and predators at 8 hrs a piece. Would love to see new orleans get one

  28. Gary Bettman loves Canada and its fans because we subsidize his failing American venues

  29. Not sure why they can't add a few teams to locations in the US where a professional hockey team would thrive. Hockey needs a boost in fan base, it's currently rising with stars like mcdavid and the aging ovechkin/Crosby but exposure is needed in large market areas. "The battle of Texas" sounds awesome, should be another team there ( as well as CT UT ect.). Look how amazing the Vegas expansion turned out to be.

  30. No way. There is not a strong fan base. I remember when I had 20 game plans . The nights Uconn was playing, A large amount of of fans would go out in the lobby to watch Uconn basketball. Wednesday games, people would leave at 9:30 no matter if the Whalers were winning or losing.

  31. The teams that make sense are going to be saved for expansion. Since the NHL was willing to try and prop up Arizona for years, it makes sense to relocate to a city that isn't prime for expansion and try there.

  32. Connecticut native here. Old enough to remember the whalers but sadly not old enough to have gone to their games. CT has had lots and lots of sports teams (at a minor level) come through from baseball, to even arena football teams (anyone remember the New Haven Knights hockey or New Haven Ninjas arena football?) none of them stayed long. Thing is the whalers were are seeped in lore and legend of CT sports, and hockey in particular, with most people going to Bridgeport or Hartford to see hockey I think that it’s a clear indicator that in the whalers a sense the love for the sport has not only grown but thrived. The worst that could happen is that is CT gets its second chance, and it is swallowed up with more competitive markets up here like Rangers, Devils islanders and even Canes fans since remember that was the original whalers franchise before they moved to Carolina. Coming from a NYR fan in CT who would love and support the whalers if they came back
