If you can get a decent player every year from the first round, and another decent player every second year from a later round, your team generally stays pretty competitive from what I have seen. By decent player I am talking about a middle 6 forward, second pairing defenceman, or better. The reason for this is the ELC contract. If you pull this off you have 2 or 3 young players at near league minimum who outplay their contract, and they give you a buffer for other mistakes.
Looking at the Flames roster, they likely need to do better than that to prevent a rebuild in a few years. The team has committed too much money to aging players, and will need some players to step up in 3 years to keep them on track.

A lot better list than the last 5 years of the 90’s. Does anyone remember Daniel Tkachuk or Rico Fata?
