As a leafs fan, Matthews is top 10 at best. Mack is getting closer to McJesus that people think. Most talented goal scorer since ovechkin? That sounds a lot more accurate to me but still I don't see matthews getting 800.
not a number 2 in the league right now. Potential yes, this past season, barely top 10. Playoffs, not even close to a difference maker in his career yet.
He as never taken a game over in the playoffs. He should be able to do that. That is a red flag for me. Yes, extend him. But 14M nope.
Would you rather have 2x 7M players or 1 AM34. That is a difficult question to answer.
Trade him
Take it easy people. Matthews was injured almost all season hence not seeing his signature shot almost all year and he still potted in 40. Stamkos missed 1/2 a decade injured and look at what he became. But if Matthews doesn't want to sign then yes trade him for as much as possible.
He has not done in my opinion played that we'll yet for that money marner does

I have no question Matthews will re-sign in Toronto…they will just use the Chinese money to get it done.
I remember many years ago when GST was first a thing, some business owner somewhere got around it by, rather than selling his goods/services for $1,000 say, on which they would have to charge GST, they sold their clients a potato instead for $1,000 (which was GST exempt) and the goods/services were 'free'. Nice loophole. Can the Leafs do something similar? Sign AM34 for say $8M and then buy a cap-free potato from him for $6M? It's a moot point anyway…sign him, don't sign him…the Leafs are going nowhere in the post-season for the foreseeable future. They are not simply not that team.
It's funny; the concept that, if Matthews leaves to take the money he could get anywhere else, he's screwing Tirono. Toronto screwed itself by signing Marner and Tavares to such big contracts in a failed effort to buy a Cup.

Drai is a more elite scorer than Matthews, and that's not even close. Matthews does play a complete game where Drai does not. Matthews should make more, but don't act like he's a better goal scorer than Drai.

This guy is a franchise player he has done everything that no player has done besides McDavid. He won the Calder, the Rocket Richard twice, the ted lindsay, and the Hart. What else could you want this guy to do? Win a cup by himself? Leafs need to stick with him and his teammates. They get to the postseason every year. It will be those last minute acquisitions that make the difference in the postseason. Brad has done a great job so far.
