The X-Factor here too is the extra cap space gained by Nashville in this deal. Maybe it fishes them a HUGE Free Agent?
Canucks should have done this trade…cause they have nothing to trade.
If you're trying to gain salary cap room why do you retain 50%?
Johansen is exactly what the doctor ordered for the Avs, a solid, veteran 2/3C? Yes please Mr. Sakic!
Landeskog is not coming back? Is Nishuchkin is legal trouble?
How in the fuck did the Preds not even get a seventh for this guy like what?
If the preds are giving guys away… Sens could use Saros
As an avs fan: HELL yeah
Perfect trade for the avs
Sakic 7-D chess moves again.
We are way, way past the time when Johansen is replacing Kadri at all. Colorado took a guy for free and is hoping he can regain a step he hasn't had in a few years now, rather than overpay for Kuznetsov or any other possible 2C that's available. It's a gamble, but it's not even a guarantee he's as good as Compher at this point.
I've heard of trading future considerations, but I've never seen being traded for past considerations 😂 lol
Galchenyuk aka future considerations lol
As a Preds fan this is definitely a wild deal. Should've at least gotten a prospect or two with Galchenyuk imo. But on the other hand I think the young guys we have are gonna do great for us so it's probably not that bad of a trade in the long run.
The preds got ripped off
fkn steal man, can the caps do something like this PLEASE MAN. RYAN JOHANSEN W 50% CAP RETENTION FOR AN ENTIRE FKN SZN?
Honestly, this is exactly what the Avs needed. With newhooks lack of production as the 2c last season that spot is WIDE open. Avs still have tons of questions. Still need a solid lw to replace gabe. Not sure what the nichushkin situation is looking like. EJ is on his way out after over a decade. Lots of question marks in Colorado rn.
As an Oilers fan I'd take Johansen for 2 years at 50% retained salary for nothing… I'd have even given them Yamamoto
That moves seal the deal about Newhook future with the Avs….either its too pressure him to take next level or he is on the market as of now.
I can only assume that there's a clause somewhere, that says, "A team cannot simply GIVE AWAY an asset for NOTHING." And so, SOMETHING has to be added going the other way, no matter how pointless that might be. But honestly, this is getting to be an embarrassing JOKE for The NHL. where teams are needing to GIVE AWAY players, or even worse, give away players WHILE STILL RETAINING THAT PLAYER'S SALARY!!!, or EVEN WORSE, moving a player AT THE COST OF sending a DRAFT PICK WITH THEM!!! Is ANYONE going to suggest (ADMIT), MAYBE the system is BROKEN?!?!?
I don't understand this either..
That's the key factor behind the trade tho, "a solid 2/3C". I don't consider it strange as he was being paid too much for too many underperformances. I'd give more credit to his 2 40g wingers and 100pt dman the previous year. I think it can work out for both sides tho, he should be a good fit with avs.
Trotz was off his meds, he's sundowining
Nashville is stocking draft picks let them cook
Rookie mistake by Trotz as a GM! Anytime a team retains 50% max on a contract, the trading team partner most likely needs to cough up a good pick or prospect.
Say what you will about Johansen but the Flames should've been in on this.
#92 at ½ the money? Two years remaining? No trade restrictions? This is the type of guy teams pay handsomely for at trade deadlines. As an Oilers fan I don't believe losing for a decade is a recipe for success. It's been almost another decade and we are still almost on other side.
But Flames should be all over free money that can help rebuild team culture and maybe land assets at a later date.
Oilers should've been doing this during their lost decade.
Why was there no bidding on this player?
What a strange deal, how could a $4MM Johanson be worth nothing?
trotz doesnt like soft players
Wow. Sakic being a legend yet again. $4M for a face-off capable 2 way Veteran Center? My goodness. No picks. No futures. No Girard? Wow…
Just a pass you know.
Avs should try and get debrincat
How were the ducks not all in on this?!?
Imagine Galchenyuk signs and scores 30. Also I Wonder what guys like Duchene and Forsberg are thinking right now…
None of this makes sense but i love it lol. You got absolutely nothing and you're eating 50%. He could totally bomb and this is still a massive fleece
I love Joey but I think every Nashville fan thinks this is for the best. He doesn’t show up for big moments and is hurt a lot. Despite being our top line center for a while, he never played like it. I trust in Trotz but am also really sad to see Joey go
Johansen just had major surgery on his right leg. He is getting into the later years of his career, he has this laid back attitude where it seems like he won't give much effort at times. These are all things Colorado are going to have to deal with him.
I’m going to miss Johansen 😔
overrated
lol Galchenyuk gets traded every year
Good for us here in colorado! Galchenyuck nearly took our goalie out with a big ass hit behind the net lol. He should be fun for Nashville. That being said, good for Galchenyuck. People are saying the trade was for nothing, but Galchenyuck played quite a few games for us this season
This was an obvious need to trade that Nashville was lucky enough to finally manage. The last thing a team missing the playoffs needs is a failing 30 year old $8 million a year offensive center. They should have been trying to dump this contract for the last two years and have finally managed to do it. Probably should dump Duchene if they can though he might actually net them something.
Colorado was willing to take a chance with this guy who the season before last managed 27 goals and 63 points which resembled the production he had with Columbus when he was 20-21. Since he came to Nashville he has struggled to score goals and aside from that one 27 goal season he has scored : 12,7,14,14,15,14,14 goals. That's not much for $8 million a year. He is a talented player who looked like something when he was leading the way in Columbus but has generally never even been as good as he was let alone improved from where he was at age 21. He has been a good playmaker in Nashville but never lived up to his original potential and has only scored more than 15 goals in one of the last 7 seasons. I loved Johansen when he was in Columbus and I thought he was destined to be an NHL star but he has been a drag on this Nashville team since he came over and he has been an $8 million drag.
Colorado desperately needs a second line center and for $4 million a year this guy could potentially do the job. He produces 25 goals and 65 points and they will be very happy. Evan Rodrigues(UFA) did this job last year followed by Alex Newhook (RFA) and Lars Eller (UFA). He should be better offensively than any of these guys, maybe all of these guys.
Nashville has freed up another $4 million in cap room on a team not planning to make the playoffs and Colorado has added a potential 65 point second line center on a team destined to make the playoffs. It looks like win-win except for Galchenyuk.
Cap space is golden. If a team doesnt need a player, you have to pay them to take the space off your hands. I'm guessing this was the best the Preds could get in exchange for the space, which they have plans for in another direction. The only other alternative is a buyout, and this deal saves them two seasons of cap recapture penalties at a time they must be expecting to be competitive (3-4 seasons out)
As a preds fan i wish we couldve gotten more but the amount of cap space we have along with all the insane talent we have is making for a very bright future. Hopefully trotz is working some magic and brings the team back from the brink. I dint expect this year to be our year but in the next 2-4 years we should be a top team.
they definitely could’ve gotten draft capital or prospects, especially if they’re retaining 50%…very questionable trade for nashville
I remember galchenyuk… he threw game 5 for the Leafs in the playoffs.
Nashville is an “internal budget” team. Remember that.
Absolutely wild. Basically they cap dumped 50% of Johansens salary – for no return.
I`m pretty sure he can bounce back and be a reliable middle 6 center for the Avs. Compare it to Johnson, he`s at 5m cap hit and lost his touch, but is 2 years older.
A buyout would have been only 2,6m cap hit for 4 seasons.
What are the Preds up to?
They have some pieces in place, Saros and Josi, Duchene and Forsberg.
Now they have over 6m dead cap.
