  1. Americans want to play in the states because of taxes and have their kids educated in the states and not here, Canadians want to play in the states for taxes and/or weather. On the flip side some players regardless of nationality want to play in a market where hockey isn't the be all end all, where they can go see a movie and have dinner without being bothered by fans or have your picture plastered in the newspaper every day.

  2. Jets 2.0 inherited Wheeler and Buff who signed long contracts and loved being here. Management loves to sign USNDT players especially if they’re from Michigan or Minnesota.
Hellebuyck is only leaving because he wants to win right now and this teams window is closing. Moving forward it would be great if they could add more WHL players too.
Arguing about which place has worse taxes, tornados, water shortages, gun crime, restrictions on control over your own body, less affordable health care is useless when the real issue is where is the players spouse from and where does she want to live. Maybe they need to bring the gf to the draft combine interviews so teams can ignore best player criteria.

  3. This is the mindset of the generation coming through. They all little babies who just want to make there money and can't handle any pressure .

  4. Don’t forget about the whole Chris versteeg thing with his interview about playing in Canada!

  5. No one wants to play in places where no one cares if you win, which is a variety of American cities. I've been to American cities where people watched regular season baseball in bars versus watching their city's NHL team in the playoffs. The Hurricanes had to have their Stanley Cup parade in their parking lot in 2006. That kind of culture doesn't make you feel like you made it.

  6. Canadian teams, but especially Toronto, Vancouver and also New York and LA – crazy high taxes, crazy high cost of living. For a young player on an entry-level contract or a low-paid journeyman, you are watching your pennies.

  7. I live in Calgary. I can’t blame Lindholm, Hanifin, Tkachuk, Bennett, Gaudreau, Toffoli, and even Sutter for wanting out. Calgary is a dump. People in Calgary will know what I mean. You can’t drive 500 feet anywhere without seeing a “construction zone”. But here is the kicker, there is no construction crew anywhere to be seen. It’s just city hall corruption. Let’s not forget there is the awful weather, property taxes are through the roof. And there is NOTHING to do in the city. Literally shopping and fine dining is non existent. Chinook mall wooooo is a dump

  8. I’m a Canadian who’s lived in Canada, Australia and France. The current state of canada is becoming worse and worse. Prices are getting out of control for everything. Not to mention when you wanna travel down south you lose 35% of your dollar right away.

  9. Unfortunately with your Prime Minister, he is like a little dictator. The lock downs were crazy and Covid restrictions were ridiculous. Add in taxes, cold weather and notoriety and it is no surprise players want to leave.

  10. Don't forget edmonton is going to be in similar situations as calgary as Draitsail and McDavaids contracts are coming soon too

  11. You guys understand that NHL is all about money, not hockey, right?

  12. I get the weather part of it however, Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Boston, NYR, NJD, Islanders, Philadelphia, Colorado, St Louis are ALL cold markets in the US. Some more than others sure. So including the Canadian teams that’s 18 teams in the NHL are in cold markets. Out of these 18 they are ALL Hockey crazy towns where going out in public would be a challenge. They all get paid in USD$, get to play in numerous warms places throughout the year and it’s on for 4 months. Come on people, why would you want to go from a great team to a mediocre team because your wife can’t be cold for a few months, with some heat brakes mixed in there. I would want to be in all of these Hockey Markets! Taxes are a bit of an issue, however you can work on that with investing options, Tax Free Savings accounts etc.

  13. The salary cap should be after tax, not before tax. That would at least fix one of the major problems.
