This keeps with the trend from his last deal of getting what would be a somewhat fair 8 year AAV but only for 5 years.

    Just fuck my shit up.

  2. Bornfighter

    could be worse 😭😭😭

  3. EntryDiligent6908

Gross and disgusting… there goes any chance at McJesus if this comes true

  4. champchampx3

If this is true, it’s at least better than his last contract. Gave him everything he wanted.

  5. Livid-Quiet-5792

Sign him but make sure there’s an out that you can trade him.

Hes not worth that $. Wish Dubas didn’t hand cuff the Leafs with a NTC on his first deal.

  6. AnySail

At 5 years I’d sign that yesterday

  7. TMLTBJ

I don’t see how this team will work with the core 4 taking up more slices of the pie

  8. buddyboykoda

I heard MLSE is just gonna give him the code to their vault and not actually announce an AAV

Honestly sounds fine tbh. Seems like so many people are ready to scrutinize any signing that isn’t 8 years @ less than his current contract (never going to happen).

The haters are dedicated. At this point he could sign for 900k, with an added signing bonus of a complimentary Stanley Cup, and people would still complain about how he could’ve taken less and could’ve gotten two complimentary cups.

  10. sokocanuck

Matthews cares about Matthews, not the Leafs.

Which is fine. We all knew it.

There is no way this team will be deep enough to win with 3 or 4 guys trying to claw every last cent.

  11. TheCarrier89

I just can’t see how this team will be successful with just a few guys making so much money. I don’t want to see anyone traded but there’s just no other way.

  12. savagegiraffe1

Nah. Send him and Willy to Edmonton for Mcdavid lol

If the media are to be believed it sounds like we are likely getting 13×5. Like in no world are getting 12.634×8. That’s pretty clear.

I think $13M cap hit is the best we can expect and it could be even higher. It handcuffs us pretty hard with JT still on the books and Marner who is going to demand something outrageous (assuming we keep him). We also need to do something with Willy at some point but if he isn’t on the roster then I say the team is just worse overall.

So we basically continue to be cap fucked for the next couple of years and then we only have three years tops with AM committed. It sucks man. I don’t know how we realistically get better with these limitations. I can’t see how we just keep running it back with the same core while tinkering with the bottom of the roster. We had good goaltending this year on practically no cap hit if you can remove Murray from the equation. We had solid defense given how much we spent on it. We were grittier. And we still fell well short of the goal. How much better/luckier can we possibly get with a majority of the roster being the same?

I mean with his injuries and how quickly players have been falling of a cliff, is 5 years really a bad thing? It brings him to 32 when the deal is up, so we essentially get Mathews for his entire prime.

His original deal he signed was 14.6% of the cap. If the cap goes up to a modest 88 million , that’s only 14.7% of the cap. It’s hardly a raise.

I think if 13×5 gets it done right now, you sign it.

13.36 x 5 is my guess, over a ten year period it’d average out to 12.5 x 10. Which is a little rich but I think it’s fair for a guy like Matthews.

  16. Volderon90

That’s fine. Brings him to 32 and who knows what he’ll be like by then. Maybe his back or wrist will be completely shot. It’s a win for us and maybe a loss for him if he’s hoping for a big contract again when he’s 32.

He would be wise to lock in 8 with his injury history but greed gets you every time

  17. InternationalBrick76

What has this guy done to be paid more than McDavid or Mackinnon?

Fuck out of here you diva.

  18. thelazywitcher

Waits 30 years for generational talent to land in our lap, gets mad when generational talent requests generational talent money. There’s no world in which this team is better without him

  19. thismadhatter

id rather 5 years than 8. Guy has wrist issues.

  20. cipher7777

13M should be around 7-8 years…maybe 13.5, but no higher.

  21. KeziaTML

At this point, I would rather trade Matthews and get people who care about winning, rather than the name on the back of their jersey.

  22. HemiKooks

Honestly, this is trash and I’m losing more respect for Matthews each day.

Like, I want him on our team. If he sticks around, he’s easily the best player to ever lace them up for the blue and white but we’re never going to win when he keeps doing this.

Squeezing every penny out of the team for fewer years. Every other star is signing x8 except our fucking guy.
