I was wondering bout this. Waddell and Grier obviously have a good relationship and we were close on Timo, so we definitely have assets they’d want (stay away from Jarvis though!). Not in love with his anchor of a contract, though, and we’d probably have to sell the farm for any retention.

He’s a stud but idk if he’s exactly what we need as much as I like him as a player

Future Considerations and a Bo-Berry biscuit for EK65, take it or leave it

Slavin/Burns, Pesce/Karlsson and Chatty/Deangelo (or some variation of that)

Would be an interesting defense, to say the least!

If the price is right it could be considered

Unpopular opinion but no thanks… unless significant salary is retained. He’s not exactly what the team needs in a D, he stepped up last year when performance would indicate pay, but prior to that played flat.

Got laughed at for even bringing this up a few months back but, he would be a great fit for our team.

If Rod is dead set on not changing our offense to allow guys a bit more freedom and creativity, then why not go get the highest scoring D man.

We like to have guys from the backend drive the play and he would looks so good in canes red.

At 11.5 million AAV I’d rather not. You’d need at the least a 75% retention. Sharks to hold 50% and a third party team like Arizona getting a draft pick for 25%. That puts him at 3 million AAV.

He has 3 years left on his contract and he turns 34 this year. From 2018-2021/22 he played less then 60 games per season due to injury issues.

No more hope projects don, develop a younger guy for a couple season before Nikishin wants to come over from Russia.

We love the blue line, I do too but we saw yet again in the playoffs, as soon as the dots are clogged and they’re blocking shots we’re generating close to zero high quality chances. We need a high scoring, finishing forward that can compete in the paint.

Edit: no hate to differing opinions but I have absolutely no idea how this is getting downvoted. A mid 30s defensive with a nearly 12 million dollar a year cap hit that’s been perpetually hurt for the last 5 years.

    Am I missing something? Lol

I guess we’re just going to fully buy into our current strategy of our D men blasting shots from the blue line. If that’s the strat, then I suppose nobody better to get than Karlsson. Would imagine we don’t get Tony D if that’s the case though

Forgetting the contract for a second, it would be interesting to see the Canes get the best OFD in the game. The Canes system wants offensive production out of RD, and they do have Slavin and Pesce (assuming he’s not part of the theoretical deal) to balance out the defensive liabilities of EK. At the very least, it would be an interesting experiment of what the best OFD would do in the system best designed to get him points.

That being said, $11.5 AAV for 4 more years is *rough* if it doesn’t work. With the supposed Aho extension and some value contracts, it’s actually doable with some retention (current cap at $21m with 18/23 players)

Guys I just want a forward.

  11. Minute-Struggle6052

SJ would have to retain 30%. Karlsson at $8 million is a fine gamble. He is a MacKinnon, McDavid, or Pastrnak level 5v5 producer. He drives offense. His mobility was back last year. He led the league in rush attempts.

If the cost is reasonable then this is a gamble worth making. I would look to deal Skjei, re-up Pesce and play Pesce at LD.

  12. The_Crypto_Caniac

I rather get DeAngelo and 1 or 2 good physical forward than Karlsson at 11 million/aav

  13. MarcusSmartfor3

Isn’t he notoriously bad at defense like some of the worst metrics in the league? I know people are like moths to light with scoring and goals, but it’s hard to believe he is even a net positive on the ice when he is a turnstile as a defenseman.

  14. Kenny_F_ing_Powers

Surprise we’re actually getting EK to play RW on the first line with Aho and Turbo.

  15. ripinpeace12

Somebody tell Don we need offense who can score.

  16. PrinceLelouch

Ek65 is my favorite non-canes defender and I don’t want him here. Unless we’re trading Burns for a forward or something. We’ve already seen the two don’t make for an unstoppable blue line. Our defense is elite already and I don’t see Karlsson being able to improve it.
Love the player, and wish him the best, tbh I’d rather have him over Burns if they were the same price. But with the signings we need to make. Eating even 7m for Karlsson will cause some problems.

  17. ExtremepcVA

I’m pretty sure GMDW just does his due diligence on everyone at this point. If we have the time and resources, it probably allows us to find deficiencies and trends in the market(s) quicker than others. I find it hard to believe we are actually seriously in on EK65.

    Some call us Manchester United
