  1. Tom started as a foward but the last two year he had played as a defender! Could you be more two-ways!

  2. Quite a bit more players from Europe starting in Sweden/Finland and making their way over to NCAA. I feel colleges are putting more resources into recruiting there as well, trying to get an edge up.

  3. his name is so close to william nylander that it makes me nervous about how hard he is going to play…

  4. Just want to thank you for sharing your hockey knowledge. I am new to the sport being in Stars country. You have really shed a lot of light on the sport and players for me. Watching your videos makes me feel like I am setting at a table having a beer with you talking hockey. Keep up the good work.

  5. At the end of every draft, you always get quasi racist people complaining that their team took “a soft European” over a “gritty North American.” It’s so tedious at this point. As a kid in the 80s, you remember the Samuelsson brothers. There was nothing soft about the way they played. Peter Forsberg had injury problems, but he never shied away from the rough stuff. There was no slam dunk Matthew Tkachuk at 11 this year. So the Canucks went with a potential top pairing (or top 4 at least) defenseman with an already advanced defensive game. Benson was the sexier pick, but if people want to call Willander the next Juolevi, why isn’t Benson the next Daniel Tkaczuk or Brian Lawton? We don’t know anything yet. Things can change a lot in 2 years. I like the pick a lot, but I’m not a scout.

  6. I felt that Tom Willander was the best Swedish defenseman in the draft. I might not have taken him this high, but with how defensemen rose in this draft I understand not wanting to miss out on him if you're targeting him. Gonna be a top pairing defenseman wherever he goes in the league

  7. They should've taken Benson. Canucks need impact players.

  8. You know those nights when you look out the window and ask yourself… "I wonder what Olli Juolevi is thinking rn…"

  9. Really good picks by the Canucks. They got Willander at 11th oa (I had him ranked 9th), Hunter 75th, and Sawyer 89th oa. 3 great picks that add strong depth to the defensive position.

  10. If he's a nightmare to play against, that sounds pretty awesome for me. I don't really care if he doesn't have the offensive upside. If he's a solid defensive d-man, then I like this pick more and more.

  11. A LOT of defencemen were taken early. It's almost like the scouts were looking at talent in a vacuum, while the GMs were looking at the economics of the NHL.

RHD are worth their weight in gold. Meanwhile, Yamamoto score 20 goals just one year ago and was on a 35-point pace during an injury shortened season. In a vacuum, that's not bad for a 3rd-line winger, not with a $3.1 million cap hit. In reality, his contract was dumped and Detroit was given another asset to take it and there are some who think he will be bought out.

On a side note, over at The Athletic, the most recent Mock Drafts had Tom Willander going 9th, 11th, and 11th.

  12. Actually when the Canucks made the pick of this guy instead of the player you wanted I was thinking you might self detonate. Vancouver needs help now not three seasons later

  13. He used to play forward, Canucks took him at 11 because they peoject him to be a top pairing D not merely top 4. It’s important to note that Zack Benson is not projected to be a #1 centre.

  14. I think All canucks fans should be happy with Tom Willander. He's going to be very good. He has also said that he's going to work on his offensive play this year, because he's rock solid when it comes to the defensive site.

  15. Icing the puck once is bad, icing it two or three times is fine haha, if you have a good faceoff guy on the ice. I really like him and am super happy with the pick.

  16. Willander looks very good so far & he HAS a great personality, which goes far in the locker room.

  17. Excited by this pick, and also getting Hunter B. when he dropped out of the 2nd round. Time to get these guys cooking and see how Allvins drafting looks!

  18. It's crazy how forwards are free essentially with cap strapped teams. you can get a star forward for free.

Dman are good assets. Doesn't hurt to have too many based on the current market. Especially when they can be moved for more valuable assets.

Capspace is gold at the end

  19. You seem a lot happier with this pick than you did the other night on the live stream. Hoping the pick works out well for your Vancouver Canucks. Cheers

  20. RHD can by default and difficulty to find can easily move up 5 plus spots. If he pans out. 5 or 6 players above him you could trade him for and receive a prospect and a player. New management gets that.

  21. I’m really happy with the pick. Sure, they passed on some quality forwards but they picked the best defenseman available. They had to do something about their prospect pipeline on defense.

  22. It really boosts your confidence in scouting when they have an eye on someone and he actually matures right in front of their eyes. His offense is skewed by converting to Defense.

  23. Do you ever have a negative take? Do you ever come right out and criticize teams, GMs or players? When do you not present the bright side, especially when it's related to the Canucks? These are, in my view, valid criticisms of what in general is an excellent hockey channel.

  24. when i read the name "Willander" and my first thought was it was some sort of new nickname for William Nylander lol

  25. Apparently the Canucks took a few of the prospects they thought would be around at 11 out to dinner and met about 5 of them and they had decided on Nate Danielson or Tom Willander. Since Danielson was already taken, I can see why they took Willander. Apparently they REALLY didn't get a good impression of Benson, which makes some sense. He dropped to 18. Eh 🤷‍♂️ who knows what's going through the minds of these scouts?!

  26. You might want to consider doing two at a time in order to hit the sweet spot of 10min runtime. Either way thanks for the continued coverage. We appreciate you

  27. The highlights I've seen show great skating ability, a great sense of when to pinch, some hands down low (he was formally a forward ), and a great first pass. Looking forward to seeing how he is utilized by BU next year.

  28. I wasnt happy with this pick but after seeing his interviews im thrilled finally a first round pick that wants to be here was really nice to see Well spoken young man as well

  29. If Willander projects as a Top 4/25 point guy & 2-way defenceman, would his comparable be like Matt Roy or Nick Jensen? Not bad players, but those guys aren’t really 11th overall worthy. Let alone in the potentially most stacked draft ever. I thought he had a higher ceiling IMO 😭

  30. Smooth skating, puck-moving defensive defenseman? Every team wants those.

  31. He’ll certainly have a less tough row to hoe than David “Why didn’t we draft Michkov, who is this guy Carey Price couldn’t even remember?” Reinbacher.

  32. Some lists and a lot of mock drafts put him higher. Second point, he only became a forward two years ago, and has been concentrating on learning defence so far. He will be working his tail off to improve his offensive performance. If I had money to lay a bet, I'd say that he ends up a top-pairing guy.

  33. When he wore #23 at the draft it brought me back to nostalgia…to the Sedin’s last game. Daniel Sedin (#22) scored at 2:33 in overtime, it was his 2nd goal of the game. His first goal came at the :33 mark of the 2nd period – his 22nd goal of the year, assisted by Alex Edler (#23) and Henrik Sedin (#33). Alex Edler had 2 assists. Henrik Sedin had 2 assists. Tom Willander looked up to 2 Sedin’s growing up. Tom Willander is the long waited succession in replacing 2 defensemen, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Alex Edler who both wore #23. Tom Willander is projected to be a #3, 2nd pairing d-man. 2+3=5. Willander wears jersey #5. Very weird and interesting at the same time

  34. He sounds good though I don't hear anything as to whether he plays physically or not. I prefer to have at least 2 D men who are like bears when an opposing forward gets near the crease.
