Impressive that so many of the best players were not taken in round 1

Look at how many of these guys became NHL players. Maybe they’re not all superstars but a vast majority of his picks made it to the NHL. He’s done extremely well with late round picks. We’ve already seen a few of his picks start to pan out in Detroit. The guy knows NHL talent when he sees it. I’m not worried at all about any of our draft picks. I trust Steve and the guy has the resume to back it up.

Would love a side by side of KH to remind everyone just how piss poor his drafting was in comparison.

To be fair, I hate looking at that part of the website because it shows you the human side to being a GM. So much luck involved its pretty depressing.

Another way to look at it is that he drafted Point Cirelli, Kucherov, Palat as 4 elite players in 9 years of drafting. Other than Vasi, there is no 1st rounder as success.

He has a very different crew now in Detroit tho

Those late round guys usually take longer to develop. In a couple years I’m pretty confident we’ll have a few of those late round hits too. Stevie knows NHL talent and how to draft.

Another way to look at it is he drafted a core around Hedman and Stamkos that ultimately went on to win two cups

I love how Vladdy was drafted before Kucherov

Yzerman drafts for ceiling. Lots of draft picks flame out, and there are lots of ways to get average NHL players other than the draft.

Each draft pick is a lottery ticket that you hope you hit the jackpot on. The ones that aren’t jackpots are whatever.
