Hellebuyck as a rental would immediately make us potential cup favorites this year but man a potential extension scares me. I hope Fitz sticks to his guns if it’s true he’s not thrilled about a potential $9m+ price tag. Those kind of goalie contracts almost never work out.

down for hell as a rental or a 1-2 year extension. Not sure I’d feel comfortable with us extending him long term if the price tag is 9+

If it happens I hope the term is reasonable. Most goalies start to regress hard once they hit mid-30s.

Put Helly on that youth blood transfer plan like that one CEO dude who’s REALLY into de-aging himself.

I think the cap space argument is dumb. This is our best chance at a cup and maybe our best roster since the dynasty years, but goalie is a huge question mark. Every contending team is tight salary cap wise, and no player ever gets their initial asking price. Yes, Hellebuyck wants $9.5 million. Can he get both and play on a contender? No.
Secondly, Vitek was a stable goalie until the second half and playoffs. If he didn’t take such a decline, I’d be more than okay running it back. Schmid is not ready to commandeer the starting net. He got tired from playing starter time in the playoffs in the Carolina series. Took him 3 games to recover.
Thirdly, do not base our entire future on Schmid’s season. He played less than 30 games with a few coming in late. A smart GM should sort of throw away his season.

I don’t see how we can fit him with luke, nemec, and mercer upcoming deals and the players we’re already committed to.

Hes 30 and his contract is gonna be STUPID expensive.
VV and Schmid are perfectly fine.

People continue to worry about the price of extension…what if we have no intentions of doing that?
What if Hellebuyck is our version of what Colorado did with Kuemper? Immediate upgrade in net, the finances are probably a wash if Winnipeg retains and we send Vitek back.

Do you really need a goalie when you’re going to be scoring 12-15 goals per game because you’re the most stacked team in the NHL?
(This is obviously sarcasm before I get the “Well actually” responses)

Holtz and Vitek will have to go the other way. Definitely afford it if Fitz sends Vitek and keep up to 1/2 of Hellebuyck’s salary. This being only a 1 year rental.
Does sending Vitek always damaged moral? As fans we don’t care because we see an upgrade in net. For players, they might feel it’s cutthroat and they might be next. We all know it’s a business, but locker room moral is still important.
Is Graeme Clark close to or surpasses Holtz as a prospect? Might have flexibility there, but either Holtz or Clark goes the other way. No way Mercer gets sent.

I love the guy. But he really lost it in the playoffs. And given the chance to pick up the pieces he completely collapsed. I don’t think he gets the keys to this formula one car again. I just can’t see it. It’s going to be someone else. Probably Hellebucyk.
