I know Briere was doing what was best for the organization when he tried to move him, but a small part of me is glad it didn’t work. I would just feel horrible for a guy who negotiated an 8 year deal with trade protection to stay in a specific city and then gets shipped off somewhere a few days before the NTC kicks in. Part of me thinks the NHLPA needs to fight for some protection in the next CBA, like a clause that says if you sign an extension with a team you cannot be traded before the extension starts unless the player agrees to it.

Hope Sanheim has a bounceback year, recoups some value, and maybe he and Briere can see if there’s a chance to trade him to a good destination in the future when the cap is higher and teams might be more willing to take on a long contract.

The only thing we can hope for now is that Sanheim lives up to that contract.

    >**The Healthy Scratch**
    >
    >Sanheim was healthy scratched by Tortorella on Feb. 20 in Calgary. He had played in all 57 games to that point.
    >
    >Sanheim had a bunch of family at the game in a rink where he played for three seasons with the Calgary Hitmen, his junior team.
    >
    >“Still haven’t figure out why but that’s in the past, Sanheim said at the end of the season. “I’m over that. We’ve moved on. I think our relationship is just fine.
    >
    >“I think we understand each other. I think he’s got a better understanding of my game now and I have a better understanding of what he expects of me.
    >
    >“Hopefully going into next season we get a better outcome and I can play more consistently.
    >
    >“The scratching obviously hurt me and probably something I wasn’t expecting, especially with where it was. There are certain games throughout a year, it gets long, you circle the dates that are meaningful to you.”

    god damn torts, that’s brutal…
