Unfortunately very true.. Calgary Edmonton and Winnipeg are all kinda in the same boat.. and unfortunately the only one with any real history that would make players want to play there is Edmonton (Gretz, Mess, etc) and they have arguably the 2 best players in the league.

The Sutter comment about MT not being able to go anywhere but the rink must be part of it too. Can be pretty much anonymous in most US cities.

One of the things fans need to realize is that players are going to have very different ways of evaluating a city than the average person. It you had $1000 per week to spend on entertainment in Calgary you would probably exhaust your options pretty quickly.
This isn’t something that 99% of people ever can care about, but Calgary is far from the best place to be rich in.

Not at all shocking tbh,
I do think the NHL needs ti get better at making the schedule travel friendly, personally I don’t think there’s any reason we need to play every eastern conference team in their home rink every year

One of the top 10 best cities in the world to live in just not for 18-35 year old jocks. A bit of a bummer that they don’t like it here but not everywhere can be a massive American city.

To add some context to this, players have insurance on their contracts, so they’re in breach of guaranteed millions if they engage in certain activities, like hitting the slopes, snowmobiling in the mountains, or whatever could injure them. That’s why they ALL play golf in the off-season.
So while you and I might find fun things to do with our days off, these guys are really dependent on events, concerts, comedies, galas, etc.

I think Calgary is great to live in just for the proximity to Banff and stuff.
I live in Toronto now and I’m missing the outdoors pretty hard.

This describes what’s faced by all Canadian teams, and it’s the reason we haven’t won a cup in 30 years.
Live with it.

Francis really leaned on Milan to answer the question. He gave a solid answer.

Not one young player is thinking for a second about catching an MLB game or an NBA game. They have their eye on the prize and they want to stick with the parent club. The vets are (over)paid to play hockey for a few years and then retire multi millionaires and they decide on a team based on the city’s night life? I just lost some respect for them right there.
