I like this deal. He probably would’ve been a safe bet to give a long term extension if he were willing to do so, but I also don’t really see his offensive game getting to a point where we’re going to end up really regretting this in two years either.
Kid is going to be a big part of the future here
Nice. Did anyone ever get confirmation on York’s deal from the other day? Asking because CapFriendly already has Cates’ contract up, but not York’s.
Agents have got to be telling players to look for the cap to be going up, no way Flyers wanted Cates/York on 2 year deals, so the player camps were clearly interested in the short term.
At this kind of price point, I’d have been happy having Cates for up to the max years instead (Even if the AAV had risen as high as 3.5). The way I see it, we can still get a reasonable deal out of Cates in 2 years to have our 3C of the future, and if he adds the offense then we can be more confident in a 2C (Or even low end 1C like Couturier).
This deal is fine.
Would’ve liked a longer term but Cates is smart not to sign one. Money is good for the player he is, good signing
Obviously, giving a young guy a longer term deal and him providing excess value in the back half would be awesome.
But with this roster and our plan/timeline… it’s probably better to keep most things short term to give us flexibility when we decide to pivot into win now mode in a few years.
Agents know caps going up soon. Good news is that he probably won’t warrant much more in two years.
Cates is banking on his development while the cap steadily rises, by the time he’s due up again the cap could jump 10M.
Win/Win.
He was on the Selke list this past year (around 15 I think?), so I hope he continues down that path.
