I could see the red wings finishing ahead of Ottawa next seaso. actually. However for the steady future after next season Ottawa has a franchise centre (stutzle) who keeps getting better, and a possible franchise defensemen (Sanderson). And a big athletic goaltender developing. Possibly the next closest blueprint for a Tampa like team.
As a wings fan, I can say that we are definitely not a contender yet. We will likely be in the hunt for the final playoff spot this year, but with how stacked the Atlantic is, it will be very tough for Detroit to get in ahead of teams like Toronto, TB, Florida, Boston..but we are closer this year than we ever have been in the past 7 My best guess is within the next 2 years we will be a consistent playoff team…within the next 5 years we will be a behemoth of a team. The future is definitely bright in Hockeytown
They’re a playoff fringe team I’d take Ottawa or Buffalo over then I rbi k they can get the 2nd wild card especially if debrincat bounces back 30-35-40 goals

Good thing youre not the GM Grav.. wings will surprise this year. Compher was one of the best 5 on 5 guys this past season. Kasper and Edvinsson will be up this year and im sure yzerman can get rid of Chiarot and Holl when Wallinder and Sandin-Pellika are ready.
In the Yzerplan i trust COMPLETELY, Wings r gonna shock alot of teams and ppl next year , just watch
They had to overpay to get players. Who are they going to get to come to a rebuilding team that's not in a prime location? They tried tanking to get the top draft picks and it didnt work. You cant tank forever so they pivoted to building depth and becoming a team thats hard to play against, while waiting for the prospects to develop.
If the Wings have the heart/grit/etc this upcoming season, I think they're a playoff team. But we'll see.

The Wings absolutely have a better team today than a week ago, but they were won of the worst teams – of course they improved, it would be hard not to.

PPL always talk like Larkin is not a pure #1 Center, but it was just teams being able to Key right in on him, just having a second guy thats a real threat will make a difference, and help him show his speed more often… Also keeping Berggren he can grow into a game breaker, he's been severly underrated.
While they won’t have one of the top lines in hockey, I see 4 lines that can score. I see players that can play up and down the lineup and contribute wherever they are. I think they’ll be a very difficult team to play against. With that said, I think this is the team yzerman wants just not with the players he wants necessarily. They’ll be right around playoffs this year and I think you’ll see them be a playoff regular again soon. Fingers crossed
People always overreacting when it comes to the wings lol. Are the wings getting better? Yes. Are they contenders? Not even close. I'm not hating i like the wings but wings fans need to relax. I dont even see them being a playoff team yet.

Not now, but definitely in the future. Yzerman is making them good enough to compete and they keep slowly getting better while building an elite deep prospect pool. The wings will be contenders again, Yzerman knows what he’s doing and knows the current roster will not even be close to what it’s gonna be when they are contending

Danielson, Kasper, Mazur, and Buchelnikov, and Lombardi are incredibly well touted forward prospects, and all of those COULD be franchise changing.
As a Wings fan I think it will ultimately come down to the prospects. They need somebody to take a big unexpected step to take them to the next level. I'm just glad they are trending toward relevance again
I think if you’re looking for a generational talent, I think they have one. He just plays on the blue line. Seider will win a Noris by the time he’s done. We have a really solid first line, and some decent forwards on the 2nd and 3rd line. Loosing Kubalik hurts our depth. Obviously I’m thrilled with the deal though. This teams has enough playmakers in Larkin, and Raymond. We needed a sniper, and got one. Our biggest problem is depth on the blue line, which we have coming in the minors. Also, Husso is a good goalie, but we need Cossa to get up to the NHL soon. We need a backup goalie.
Wings fan here not sure if you watched much of them this last past year because we literally were in the hunt until we purposely tanked at the deadline

Unfortunately, I too see the potential for endurring mediocracy as a result of never getting any high draft picks. Detroit is not a big draw for free agents. That said, Yzerman is a master of managing cap space, and there are often situations where a team has to trade valuable pieces to a team with a decent prospect pool. I think the next couple of seasons will be key for trade opportunities that take advantage of high cap space and good prospects. Yzerman may have to sacrifice "untouchable" young players.
As a Red Wings fan, they are not a contender yet. People are expecting the Yzerplan to work right away but we need to have more patience, landing DeBrincat is huge because it's been a while since a somewhat big name wanted to come to Detroit, once this team becomes more competitive they could hopefully land another big name or two and have cap space because Yzerman hasn't been giving out too many long term contracts. They can afford to overpay some people now to entice them to play in Detroit and keep this team competitive while the younger guys develop.
I miss Detroit being relevant. So many teams that no one cares about at the top of the standings these days.

They have drafted well under Yzerman and while you need veterans to mentor the young guys and be in a position to not just hand them roster spots Yzerman’s free agent signings just pure underwhelm.

Husso was actually really good last year
It's mischaracterizing the year when you only look at end of year record and stats and totally forgets that we made it up to a playoff spot around 60 games into the season and were above .500 record. AND THEN we got bad when we sold everything off and got hurt and tanked the rest of the season to finish only 6 pts above the year before and got rolled over every game to wreck the rest of the stats too.
90% sure he's waiting on a team looking for a top 6 forward to sell for high. Trade up on a good draft year.
There are some places holders currently on the roster currently and Yzerman has structured the contracts accordingly imo. While I agree with Compher, Copp, Holl and Chiarot contacts being pretty mid, I think it's easy to forget the cap will be going up in the next few years. These guys will be easier to move when teams have more money to throw around, but that's also banking on the prospect pool pushing them out.
Murky middle for Detroit. Only team in the eastern conference not to win the draft lottery, and won't win it anytime soon.
I have followed this team since the early 1980s since the Dead Things era. I have seen the struggle by this franchise to be a winner and it took over 20 years to do so. I have the feeling the rebuild will go on more than a decade as the cap provides parity and SY has to constrain his ambitions to brackets of time. Right now that is Larkin hits 30 years old.
The 2022 and 2023 UFAs are good talent, but we not growing by leaps and bounds compared to MTL, BUF, or OTT.
