It’s not like we were going to get a big return anyway, but I just want one trade to go through properly. Everyone else knows Fletcher handcuffed Briere so he’s at least trying to fix stuff.

I mean it’s certainly an oddity that Carolina’s GM said in a press conference that the trade was still going to happen and then it didn’t.

This is a win vs the rumored trade. Saves 2.5 mil on the cap and a retention slot to use at the deadline. Way more valuable than the low level prospect we would have got.

I think a buyout might actually be better. You could argue the extra retention slot at the TDL is more valuable than the low grade prospect we would have gotten. The two year cap hit won’t really have an impact either

I honestly prefer this to retaining half of his contract this year. Gives us an additional 2.5mil in cap space than was previously rumoured, and gives us another spot this year to retain on someone else. This could open us up to retain on a guy as part of a trade, and get some additional, more valuable assets than the rumoured middling prospect in a 3-way trade, for example. Obviously that’s not definitely happening, but I prefer having that flexibility.
Imagine being so hated that an uncompetitive team buys you out on the last year of at two-year deal.
