That’s a very speculative thing to say (op not the article); There’s no reason to believe that if Montreal was interested in Michkov and rolled out the red carpet as Philly did that he wouldn’t have been excited to play here.
As for the article, I think it’s far too early to “look back” on a draft that happened 1 month ago. Give the kid time to develop and we can revisit in 3-5 years when we have a better sense of what he can become. To this day I don’t think people are upset at drafting a potential top RHD, I think most are upset at what we left on the table (Ex: Michkov and Benson). Far too early to tell if this was the right choice or not though.
Do this after more then 3 weeks following his draft… ffs. Just go on summer break.
The issue here is that too many people speuclate and act as though they have inside info….
Every year we do redrafts and the players always move.
Here are my thoughts (and DAVID is reflective of these thoughts, and I like the pick). This is all just my opinion.
– Hughes and Gorton (and MSL, possibly) are looking at an opening lineup for October 2025.
– Players tend to play to their peak between 24 and 28, older end for D, even older for G
– Every player Hughes has drafted or signed or traded for (with the exception of Monahan) will be entering that window in the 2025 season.
– This draft was about macro organizational needs, not this year needs, hence 3 x RD, and 3 x G.
– Understanding that not all prospects achieve the ceiling they had when young, the strategy of filling the pipeline just increases the chances of more of them making the NHL.
– Upon reflection I would rather have DAVID (the person) on my team than Michkov (the person). Generational talents alone are not enough to win Cups (hi, Edmonton).
– Hughes is trying to build the prototypical 20 man SC roster. He may fail, I hope he succeeds, but all of his moves are based on opening night 2025.
Part of the reason why it’s 2025 is at least 3 teams in the Atlantic are further ahead in their rebuild.
