  1. Great in-depth analysis. Impressive.
For the Canucks, Nils Hoglander or Vasili Podkolzin might have bounce back seasons … and bounce back again to a regular NHL roster spot.

  2. I'll put my imaginary money on Nashville making it. I like the additions they made and their goaltending is fantastic.

  3. I think brunettes offence plus solid d and saros gonna get nashvillle into a wild card spot

  4. Honestly, I have no idea who might slip up? Your Stats, and your knowledge and experience together with your presentation is enough for me Shannon.
I don’t know where you get your energy from. But, as a multi-year subscriber I am grateful to you and your family for the Service that you provide.
    Excellent as always Buddy!

  5. watch Sharangovich have more goals & points than Toffoli this upcoming year… not saying it will happen, but it would be viewed as a massive mistake by the Devils if it did happen

  6. The Canucks didn’t have an off year. They’re just an off franchise overall. Seriously when the Canucks do well and make the playoffs they literally surprise everyone.

  7. Calgary had several players that played below their average so bounce backs likely.

  8. Pshhh, not even a contest… clearly it's one of the predators… oh wait, RIP our BC wildfire fighters. For that reason I hope the flames get dead last.

  9. i still hope to see a coaches power rankings someday where you rank every team based on their coach/coaching staff would be interesting to me

  10. Like you said, for Vancouver, it relies highly on Demko being healthy for a vast majority of the season. Likely I think Vancouver is in the 4th or 5th in the Pacific at the best and more likely looking at 5th being the dream and 6th is most likely.

for me Nashville is the most likely to make it, just get a tiny bit more scoring and Saros being Saros, they get in.

  11. Only one of these teams has a star center, star D man, and star goalie, who was replaced with the league's worst goalie for half the year last year. Does Demko count as a bounce back candidate? They're the only one of these three that has the talent to really make it happen.

  12. My money would be on the Canucks. After a lot of unsteadiness last season is looked like they started to come together as a team towards the end. Most of their core is in their prime years and I bet hungry to finally have some success. Someone needs to earn the C though, they look a bit flaccid at times and could really need someone to lead through the tough and tight games.

Calgary definitely has a good enough team on paper, but their vibes just seem awful. But if the new coach works out and players enjoy playing there then they should be a playoff team just through their star players bouncing back.

Nashville look absolutely awful in my eyes. That Ryan O'Reilly goes from 3C in Toronto to 1C in Nashville says a lot. Without Forsberg in peak form they don't have any kind of threats up front, which is highly questionably since the last time he played over 70 games in a regular season was in 2016-17 so injury or a performance decline is likely. So many of their important pieces are old as shit as well. So they will likely rely on Saros standing on his head another season to even get back to their mediocre last season.

  13. It’s sad to be a Canucks fan. Every year I try to deny the numbers and 1-10 it is successful. 🙁🤦🏻‍♂️

  14. Right now I am not sold on Trotz as a GM. He created a lot of dead cap to replace his aging veterans with aging veterans.
Between Vancouver and Calgary, one team had several players with off years and hated their coach to the point that it was a toxic environment. The other was Vancouver. I'll take Calgary, the team that has obvious factors that would cause them to finish better than last year.

  15. None of them would be my best guess in August.
    The Flames are a mess.
Nashville has decent goaltending and pretty good defense but can't score to win the 55-60% necessary to make the playoffs (60+ in the West).
And the Canucks are still in rebuild denial.
If any team is going to make the playoffs, I'd bet on the Blues. Then the Coyotes.
    My standings:
    Central –
    Dallas
    Colorado (despite their big injury)
    St. Louis
    Pacific –
    LA
    Edmonton
    Vegas
    Wildcards –
    Seattle
    Minnesota
    9th and 16th –
    Winnipeg
    Arizona
    Nashville
    Calgary
    Anaheim
    Chicago
    Vancouver
    SJ
Yeah, not going to be a good year for Sharks fans 🙃

  16. Well done, all the question marks but… all the potential, they all finish out, but, you picked 3 teams and of the teams that drop out and the ones that squeak in, 1 of these could do it!

  17. To Nashville Myers, to Canucks 7th rounder.
Canucks sign UFA Dumba for 6X6
Canucks sign UFA Jones for 1X1
    That’s my proposal.

  18. The Flames are hoping too many players have a bounce-back season, and many of them are older veterans…

  19. if demko played like demko we would of had a few more wins. now if we can have an average penalty kill then thats a few more wins. that would put us as a playoff team.

  20. Flames were just horribly unlucky. Plus very down year from Markstrom. They kinda should get better.

Preds were decimated by injuries and deadline fire sale. But, well, Saros kept Nashwaukee Predmirals in the race. He can't work this magic all the time. Or can he? And, well, healthy Forsberg would be great to have.

Canucks – wheel of mediocrity keeps spinning, until someone finally makes a rebuilt call.

  21. i think the main standouts for calgary this past season, are the losses vs teams like chicago and san jose

  22. No playoffs my prediction for canucks slow started October November December? Right shot Defense is slow so far age Cole Hronek Myers January Bounce Back same old same old losing Are Division Teams

  23. probably Preds. It's rare for Canada to have nice things when it comes to the NHL.

  24. While the Preds are technically the closest on paper, I'm not entirely sure that I've ever seen a team that has nine picks within the first four rounds making the playoffs in a season. They struggle with scoring goals and with Ryan Johansen and Matt Duchene out of the core, I'm not sure that we'll see much offense from Nashville unless someone else breaks out… which I feel is doubtful.
In the long-run, maybe missing the playoffs would be ultimately beneficial to the Preds all things considered.

  25. What was missing for the Canucks in the first half was the penalty kill. Fix that and it is a very different season last year.

  26. Calgary should have a bounce back year, it's really just a question of if markstrom want's to make saves this year or not.

  27. I think the Flames and Preds have a better chance of making it over the Canucks

  28. I think Rick Tocchet as Canucks coach will be an advantage over other contending teams near playoffs edge..

  29. If the Canucks are in this conversation why aren’t the Blues? The Blues have one bad season (still better than the Canucks) and now we completely write them off?

  30. Some of those stats you take with a grain of salt they are VAGUE stats.
I simply look at a simple stat and that is plus minus you NEED to be a plus unless you have an amazing powerplay you cannot consistently win a minus team.I can explain WHY those other stats like unblocked shots etc etc are not accurate indicators but would take me way too long.
I can look at a team like Ottawa last year they like Calgary could have made the playoffs if not for some big minute guys having a MINUS stat.Debrincat and Batherson were useless if he is on the ice for double the goals against than they score.
You can't say goaltending is ever a difference and this has been proven over many years as goalies move from team to team their stats reflect the teams quality.Binnington went from goat to invisible Kuemper goat to invisible Patrick Roy Goat to shipped out gets back on a good team Colorado and wins the cup Colorado was actually a VERY good team expected to win the cup even before Roy arrived.

  31. “At least they got a point”

If the team in question has that six or seven times a year, that’s not bad. That’s a huge boost if a good team has a rough night.

When you get to ten, are you really a good team?

Let’s look at a comparable to the 2022-23 Flames, Florida Panthers circa 2011-12.

38-26-18 for 94 points and first in the South East Division. They drew the #3 seed and faced off against the 102 point, #6 seed New Jersey Devils.

The series was competitive, Florida was in no way a bad team. Up 3-2 in the series Florida held all the cards. Game 6 in Jersey heads to OT, the first game in the series to do so.

So anyways we’re off to Game 7 in Florida. Once again the game heads to over time and the Panthers…. Survive! This could be the TSN Turning Point! Adam Henrique silences the crowd 3:47 in to OT2.

Never trust a team that has 12+ Loser Points, they are a deceptive group of teams they are.

  32. I think that the Canucks now have the organizational alignment and the on-ice talent to begin year one of a steady rise in the ranks. Flames are a mixed bag of older players and are likely on the way down. And the Preds are just beginning to reconceptualize who they are. Actually I could see them possibly outperforming their depth, but the near future seems hazy.

  33. The preds have a lot of young forwards who had great streches last year Novak, glass, parssinen, evangelista, tomisino if at least one or two of them can take another step next year I think nashville gets in, novak was actually 20th in the league in points per 60 mins, was higher than guys like crosby, mathews

  34. I'm hoping the Canucks get there. If they get a full season out of Demko they should be in the running. Who knows how many more wins they would have gotten last season if they'd had another twenty-five starts from Demko. They only needed six.

  35. Preds for sure. Calgary could easily make the playoffs if they hustle in the coming season. As to the hapless, poorly run, working from within a siege mentality, poorly coached, horrible owners…nah, they are not going anywhere this year. Now their farm team, a way different story. Rooting for them all the way.
