1. – We got Erik Karlsson, #65, with 65 days left until puck drop, it was meant to happen today! I wonder if Dubas waited until today for that exact reason, Crosby is very superstitious, so this brings some good juju to the Penguins, hopefully.

    – Getting rid of 4 of 5 of our worst contracts and even with retaining 1.56 mil on Petry and only getting 1.5 mil retained on Karlsson we still somehow shed 3.1 mil in cap space is a massive win!

    – If somehow we can get Carter to LTIR or off the books and remove all 5 of our bad contracts, this is the sickest moves I have ever seen!

    – Not to mention we brought in a good young player in Pitlick who has 71% on finishing and can add some much needed depth scoring, or hell (not likely to happen) even put him up with Sid and make him Sheary v2.0.

    – Then there's the top-10 protection on the 1st round pick! Another win!

    – Karlsson as PP1 QB is going to be amazing and this team will be so exciting to watch, all gas, no brakes!

    – Taking pressure off of Letang and hopefully splitting minutes with him is another huge factor that getting Karlsson will add to the Pens!

    – This Karlsson pickup was this generations Paul Coffey pickup! I am super hyped!

    – If Nedeljkovic can play even close to how he did in his rookie season, when he was nominated for the Calder, he will be a huge upgrade to DeSmith.

    – I would love to see Tomas Tatar picked up for the 3rd line (if we can get him at a decent price) and maybe a better 3rd pair right D than Chad Ruhwedel, or give Ty Smith a chance on 3rd pair on his offhand.

    – Maybe put Nylander with Malkin and move Rust down to the 3rd line if he struggles this year. Tatar – Eller – Rust would be a pretty sick 3rd line. Definitely would be a lot better than the Daily Faceoff projected Granlund – Eller – Carter line!

    – Lastly, define irony: Mike Hoffman traded out of Ottawa (cuz of drama with Erik Karlsson's wife and his g/f) to San Jose, to immediately get flipped out of San Jose for Erik Karlsson. Then Erik Karlsson gets traded to Pittsburgh, who just traded for Mike Hoffman, then immediately flip him to San Jose for Erik Karlsson. LOL!

  2. This is amazing Dubas did great job anybody find's fault with this is IDIOT

  3. Top 4 defenseman Pens Karlsson,Petterson,Letang Graves Deep run playoff mobile defensemen

  4. This will take 5 minutes a game off Kris good for him defense is controlling puck clock 🕒 that's defense Petterson,Graves defense

  5. I am totally blown away that Dubas got rid of both the granlund and petry contracts and out from under a 2.75M 3rd pairing dman in rutta. I am surprised petry went back to montreal though. I am so glad the pens werent going to run it back with the jarry/desmith pairing. For the pens to get Karlsson AND gain over $3M in cap space? wow. I still would prefer Ruhwedel be the 7th or 8th d-man than the 3rd pairing.

  6. To think, Dubas gave up just about every disappointing player and contract on the roster (minus Jeff Carter), didn't have to part ways with Ty Smith or PO Jospeh, still keep Sam Poulin, Owen Pickering, and Brayden Yager, and made sure the first rd pick to SJ in 2024 is a top 10 protected, to get Erik Karlsson.

Whether this leads The Penguins to the playoffs or not, Dubas already has done more in two months than Ron Hextall did in two years.

I love the trade for the value of what The Penguins gave up, Jan Ruuta, Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, and Mikael Granlund. Karlsson probably won't score a 100 points again, but he instantly upgrades the backend offensively.

  7. Cap space is often the key asset/liability in play. When assessing what they “gave up”, you have to factor that in.

  8. I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS PUMPED FOR THE PENS IN A LONG TIME!!! An entertaining season is coming I imagine!!

  9. Habs fan here. just saying '' eating hugues money '' is exagerated. Guy get rid of 2 bad contract with Hoffman and pitlick. Trading for petry, keeping %, for trading him again prabably soon for 2M. draft pick for Allen or DeSmith. its a win for both teams with the way they wanted. Also forgot, petry back means matheson and draft pick for free…

  10. Yeah this trade is an absolute win. Dubas literally pulled off the "all our bad players for a good player" trade.

  11. I'm not as convinced this will result in more points in the standings.
The actual defending on the 2nd and 3rd pair got worse, and Nedeljkovic may be worse than DeSmith.
EK has to pump a lot of points out to negate that. Plus 10M is a huge cap hit for a D-man that can't defend.
However, shedding Granlund is lovely. I like the addition of Pitlick. And most importantly of all, EK makes the team more watchable.

  12. People also forget that Karlsson was 3rd in takeaways among Dmen last season. But not only that, Karlsson is 3rd in takeaways over the last 5 season's combined. Which is all the more impressive with the games he's missed. He isn't the defensive stalwart that some other Dmen are, but he isn't useless either. He makes high skill defends on the puck in narrow space multiple times a game, and he does it seemingly effortlessly. I think the Pens need maybe 1 more piece in the lineup, but Karlsson is a massive add that makes them a legitimate threat the next 2-3 years at winning another Cup. And though I've not forgotten 2016, I'll be rooting for y'all to get it.

  13. 32 teams, 16 potential contenders, 1 winner. The odds to win another cup are very slim, but trying to be in the race for this long is just so much fun! Credits for Kyle Dubas and Hunter Hodies. Dubas for being close to perfect since he's been here. Hodies for seeing a potential Karlsson deal even before the speculations began. My crystal ball is on its way Hunter 😉 Can't wait for the new season to begin!

  14. Usually you can't trade all of your "bad" players for good players. In this maneuver, we traded a bunch of bad contracts, one first rd and second rd pick for a REALLY great player, got a good 3rd rd pick and somehow subtracted $3 million from the salary cap…Dubas is a freaking wizard!

  15. Its only bias canadians that talks about Karlssons defense as bad, he is solid. But why do people want to drive a Ferrari like Fiat. When Karlsson is so good offensivly, u want to give him more freedom and unleash him. Karlsson is not as bad defensivly like they make him to be. Alot of jelousy since his Norris win.

  16. Let's be honest people, do you think they are going to beat, Rangers, Carolina, New Jersey for a play off spot?

  17. I do think the Habs getting rid of Hoffman is kind of overlooked. Reaquiring Petry, even at ~4.5mil is a little odd, but I will admit its much better spent there than on Hoffman.

  18. Try to think about one team who let go a first round pick to acquired karlson way earlier in his career

  19. I'm guessing Mario got out because he would've got rid of Crosby Letang Malkin at last year's deadline to get as many picks in the last draft as possible 🤔and he was right YOU GUYS MISSED THAT WINDOW AND POTENTIALLY COULD HAVE THOSE PLAYERS RETIRING IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS GOOD LUCK YOU'RE GOING TO NEED IT GO HABS GO 💕💕 💕💕💕💕💕

  20. Karlsson playing on team with Latang may have similar problems to him playing on team with Burns 🔥

  21. the erik karlsson line and kris letang line is going to play 80% of each game with how much they play 🤣 Ty Smith and POJ are going to have it extremely easy

  22. Something not talked about is Nylander. I hope with guentzel out he plays with sid or geno and racks up some points. We extend him and hopefully if his brother is free next year we can grab him and get them playing together!

  23. To be fair I feel like every team does that drop pass move on the PP

  24. Enjoy Dubas, guys. He does a lot of good things. This is a good trade for the immediate future of the Pens. What it looks like in 5 years will be rough, but who cares right now

  25. As a Habs fan, we were winners! Pitlick is a decent player but was waiver bound. Hoffman we were ready to give him away, even retain salary, and to get surprisingly good return for him is a bonus. Receiving the 2nd rounder is an excellent return. The minor leaguer Legare is a native Montrealer and will fit in with Laval (our AHL team). Weird getting Jeff Petry back, but you can be sure Kent Hughes is working on a deal to move him. The goalie DeSmith is actually a plus for the Habs. He is an above average backup and strengthens us.

  26. I hope yinz are right about Karlsson from a defensive standpoint. My first reaction to it was, "Well, ok then, I guess we'll see how it goes." That was the same thing I said when we got Phil Kessel in 2015.

  27. You guys are going to be stuck in purgatory for so long oh my god😂😂😂

  28. Karlsson’s ability getting puck out of D zone into O- zone either carrying in or passing in is another huge factor that I believe helps Pens especially how they like to play. Will help on PP and can maybe give Tanger a bit of a rest to keep more fresh late in season. This move along with upgrading to Graves at other D man as well as Eller , Nieto and Acciari on bottom 6 helps a lot as well.
